Notes: Polyimide fibers have been produced from both polyamic acid and polyimide resins, derived from 2, 2-bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride and 2, 2-bis (4-4-aminophenoxy) phenyl) hexafluoropropane, by extrusion into various aqueous organic media. Polyimide fibers obtained from polyamic acid fibers after thermal imidization exhibited round or oval cross-sections, while fibers obtained directly from a polyimide resin had dogbone, C-shaped, or oval cross-sections. The effect of polymer inherent viscosity and filament production parameters on the formation of macropores within the filament will be discussed. Tensile properties of fibers, produced under various conditions, are listed and compared. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Addition polyimide oligomers have been synthesized from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and 3,3′-methylenedianiline using a variety of latent crosslinking groups as end-caps. The nominal 1300 molecular weight imide prepolymers were isolated and characterized for solubility in amide, chlorinated and ether solvents, melt-flow and cure properties, glass transition temperature, and thermal stability on heating in an air atmosphere. Adhesive strengths of the polyimides were obtained both at ambient and elevated temperatures before and after aging at 232°C. Properties of the novel addition polyimides were compared to a known nadic end-capped adhesive, LARC-13.

Notes: The permeability of nine different polyimide membranes to H2, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2 has been determined at 35°C and at applied pressures of up to 9 atm. The dianhydride monomers used for the synthesis of the polymides were PMDA and 6FDA, whereas the diamine monomers were ODA, BDAF, and p-PDA. The selectivities of the 6FDA polymides toward CO2 relative to CH4 are higher than those of the PMDA polyimides at comparable CO2 permeabilities. Both types of polyimides exhibit significantly higher CO2/CH4 selectivities than more common glassy polymers, such as cellulose acetate, polysulfone, and polycarbonate. The selectivities of the PMDA and 6FDA polyimides to O2 relative to N2 are of the same magnitude and generally higher than those of common glassy polymers with similar O2 permeabilities. The polymides are more permeable to N2 than to CH4, whereas the opposite is true for many other glassy polymers. Possible factors responsible for the above behavior, such as segmental mobility, mean interchain distance, and formation of charge transfer complexes, are examined. The relevance of the study to the development of more highly gas-selective and permeable membranes for the separation of gas mixtures is also discussed.

Notes: Three polyphenylquinoxalines were prepared by the one-step solution cyclopolycondensation of 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminobenzophenone with three novel bisbenzils containing oxyphenylene groups. High molecular weight polymers were obtained that exhibited good solubility in chlorinated solvents and m-cresol and formed tough, flexible films from solution. Glass transition temperatures Tg which were determined by thermomechanical analysis, torsional braid analysis, and dielectric loss measurements showed that the inclusion of oxyphenylene units into the polymer chain was effective in reducing the Tg. However, the onset of polymer decomposition, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis and isothermal aging, disclosed that the oxyphenylene units also decreased the thermooxidative stability for two of the polymers studied.
