Notes: Abstract The transplacental nephrotoxicity of mercuric chloride has been studied in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Mercuric chloride was injected s. c. to rats at the dose of 1 mg/kg during the last 8 gestational days or the whole pregnancy. Both mothers and newborns developed a transient renal dysfunction resulting in an increased urinary excretion of beta2-microglobulin and albumin. In mothers and their female offspring, these effects were completely reversible and did not influence the subsequent evolution of the renal function. In the male offspring, however, transitory changes in protein excretion were again observed a few months later, concomitantly with an enhanced accumulation of alpha2u-globulin in the kidney. The transfer of mercury from maternal to fetal tissues was very small. The kidney concentrations of mercury in newborns were more than 300 times lower than in mothers. The barrier role of the placenta is not sufficient to prevent the occurrence of renal effects in the offspring of rats treated with inorganic mercury during pregnancy.

Notes: Summary An overview is presented of the salient aspects of the DOM-project of breast cancer screening carried out in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Results on stage at diagnosis, case-fatality, and mortality rates suggest that the program has been effective. Attention is devoted to the issue whether knowledge about risk factors for breast cancer is helpful in making a screening program more effective or efficient. It is concluded that such knowledge is of limited importance.

Notes: Summary Selenium has been claimed to have chemo-preventive properties. However, data showing that in humans selenium levels are already decreased prior to diagnosis of breast cancer were not available. Such information is mandatory before oral selenium supplementation in the primary prevention of (breast) cancer in humans is acceptable. This question of a ‘preventive-potential’ of selenium was evaluated in a case-control study nested in a cohort, because this design allows determination of the time-order of preceding selenium levels and subsequent cancer risk. The cohort consisted of 5577 women aged 55–70 years from the DOM project, a population based breast cancer screening program in the Netherlands. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was used to measure the selenium content of toenail clippings. The 69 cases of breast cancer found during follow-up after screening represent ‘recent’ tumours since all women had a negative screening mammogram 3–5 years previously. No decreased selenium levels, as measured in nail clippings from the big toes, could be detected in cases-to-be, either when compared to 4 age matched controls per case or when compared with a random control group drawn from the entire cohort. On the contrary, a tendency for slightly higher selenium levels among ‘future’ cancer cases was observed. As to the sensitivity of detecting differences in selenium by nail clippings, lower selenium could be detected in nails of current smokers. The smoking-related decrease in nail selenium level was of the same order as the differences between breast cancer cases and controls, but was independent of the breast cancer risk. Results are similar to a comparable study on premenopausal breast cancer and argue against a preventive role for selenium on breast cancer risk.

Notes: Abstract We observed the neutron scattering of mixtures of deuterated and normal polystyrene in bulk for samples (strips) undergoing a stress relaxation after a step-strain. Some samples were just melt (i.e. molten at T 〉 Tg=100°C), others were crosslinked and thus some were rubbers at T 〉Tg. The scattering measured at different times elapsed after the step-strain gives access to the dynamics at the submolecular scale (300-10 A). It is compared with the theoretical predictions that one may extract from the classical models. Observed discrepancies are tentatively interpreted following several “remarks” on the topology of the network and the possible mechanisms of deformation at the corresponding scales.

Notes: The degradation process of linear water-soluble vinyl polymers was followed in aqueous medium at temperatures higher than 150°C. We found that, for any chemical structure, thermal oxidative degradation of the longest chains always occurs, leading to moieties of lower molecular weight (20,000-60,000). The behavior of swollen tridimensionnal networks was tested under the same conditions, and it appeared that rheological and fluid loss properties of the system could be maintained in that case for an optimum number of crosslinks. The corresponding gels were used in simple formulations containing some other drilling fluid components. The first results concerning the thermal stability of the latter are very encouraging. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
