Notes: Background Sporotrichosis most commonly presents as a localized lymphocutaneous infection following traumatic inoculation of soil, vegetables or organic substrates contaminated with the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Cases of widespread cutaneous lesions are rare. There have been isolated reports of household outbreaks of sporotrichosis involving cats and humans. Methods We report 24 cases of culture-proven sporotrichosis presenting with widespread cutaneous lesions. Results These 24 cases are part of an epidemic currently occurring in Rio de Janeiro. All patients reported contact with cats with sporotrichosis and 17 reported a history of a scratch or bite. Clinical manifestations included fixed lesions at multiple anatomical sites, and fixed lesions associated with the lymphocutaneous, bilateral lymphocutaneous and mucosal forms of the disease. Two patients were alcoholics and one patient was diabetic, while the remaining patients did not present any immunosuppressing condition. All patients responded to treatment with itraconazole. Conclusions The domestic cat has played an important role in the transmission of sporotrichosis in Rio de Janeiro and seems to have contributed to this unusual clinical manifestation.

Notes: This paper presents a first approximation of net CO2 fluxes from mineral soil due to land use, land-use changes and forestry (LULUCF) activities in Brazil for the periods 1970–90 and 1975–95. The methodology employed is an adaptation of the approach proposed by the IPCC in ‘Revised 1996 guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories’, which is based on the variations in soil C stocks as a function of changes in land-use activities. The calculation was done separately for each Brazilian state and subsequently summarized for all of Brazil. The annual fluxes for Brazil indicate a net emission of CO2 to the atmosphere, which decreased from 93.3 Tg CO2 for the period 1970–90 to 46.4 Tg CO2 for the period 1975–95. This corresponded to yearly net emission rates of 11.0 g CO2 m−2 year−1 for the 1970–90 period and 5.5 g CO2 m−2 year−1 for the 1975–95 period. Within each administrative region, considerable differences in the yearly emission rates between the states could be observed. Several sources of uncertainties could be identified. The most important uncertainties were linked to the impact factor values, which represent changes in native C stock associated with conversion of the native vegetation to agricultural use.

Notes: The photodegradation of EPDM based on dicyclopentadiene was followed by FTIRspectroscopy and the main photo-oxidation products were identified by derivatization reactions. It could be found that the photodegradation is initiated at the diene with formation of α,β–unsaturated carbonyl compounds and is then propagated to the ethylene-propylene segments. The propagation reactions are accelerated and, hence, the rate of photodegradation increases with the diene content

Notes: Abstract Cluster numbersn s from exact expansions for directed percolation in dimensions 2 to 4 are studied at various probability values. The main considerations as regards the asymptotic behaviour are that: $$(i) n_s \propto \exp ( - const s^Z ) for p〈 p_c (Z = 1) and p 〉 p_c \left( {Z = 1 - \frac{1}{d}} \right).$$ (ii) at the critical thresholdn s ∼s −τ+1, although the data can only be reconciled with existing estimates for the exponent if the scaling ansatz is refined to include a first correction.
