    Notes: We have calculated the geometries and binding energies for the most tightly bound isomers of (NaCl)n, n=2 to 15, and (NaCl)nNa+ and (NaCl)nCl−, n=2 to 14. In this paper, we discuss the methods used to obtain these geometries and binding energies and compare our results with experimental observations and previous calculations. We have also determined the energies required to remove NaCl molecules adiabatically from clusters and have calculated relative decay rates for evaporative dissociation at various temperatures.

    Notes: Supersonic free jet expansions are often used to produce beams of cold molecules and clusters. They are an essential part of laser vaporization cluster sources, where small particles of a material are seeded within a helium carrier gas during the expansion. These sources accelerate the clusters to the thermal velocity of the helium gas used in the generation process. By tilting the acceleration grids in a time-of-flight spectrometer, the initial velocities of molecular clusters transverse to the flight path can be selectively reduced to zero, allowing for a less off-axis flight path and permitting detection of higher mass clusters than is possible with conventional post-acceleration deflection schemes. Mass-resolved spectra of ions larger than 27 000 amu have been obtained using this scheme.

    Notes: Background  Eosinophils play a central role in asthma, but the interplay of the effects of smoking, eosinophils and asthma remains unclear.Objective  The primary objective of our study was to investigate the extent to which smoking modifies the effect of asthma on circulating eosinophils, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts.Methods  Data were collected semiannually between 1987 and 1994 from HIV-negative participants in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Asthma was defined by a questionnaire at baseline as a self-report of diagnosed asthma. A total of 1420 blood samples from 197 asthmatics and 15 822 from 1997 non-asthmatics were collected.Results  Eosinophil levels were higher in asthmatics (28% of asthmatics had eosinophils 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:09547894:CEA1730:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉4% and 16% of non-asthmatics) regardless of smoking history, but smoking modified the association between eosinophils and asthma. Namely, the odds ratios for eosinophils being 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:09547894:CEA1730:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉4% in asthmatics to non-asthmatics decreased from 2.7 (95% CI: 2.0, 3.6) in never, to 2.1 (1.4, 3.1) in former, and to 1.5 (0.9, 2.3) in current smokers. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses coherently showed that smoking increased eosinophils in non-asthmatics, but the converse was true for asthmatics. In contrast, no differences in peripheral blood T cell counts between asthmatics and non-asthmatics were observed.Conclusion  Under the established link between increased eosinophils and asthma, these data indicate that smoking modified this relationship. This finding suggests that smoking plays a different immunological role in asthmatics and non-asthmatics.

    Notes: Abstract. Insulin-like growth factors (IGF)-I and IGF-II are produced by osteoblasts and are important paracrine/autocrine regulators of osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Estrogen has been reported to increase gene expression of IGF-I in rodent osteoblasts. However, because species differences have been demonstrated in expression of various aspects of the IGF system in bone cells, it is not known whether this action also occurs in human osteoblasts. Thus, we assessed the effects of estrogen treatment on IGF-I and IGF-II gene expression in vitro in a recently developed human fetal osteoblast cell line that has high levels of estrogen receptors. As assessed by a quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction method, treatment of hFOB/ER9 cells with 17β-estradiol (E2) increased steady state levels of IGF-I mRNA in a time- and dose- dependent fashion with a maximal increase of 319% ± 33% (P 〈 0.01) of control occurring after treatment with 10−7 M E2 for 48 hours. In contrast, E2 did not alter steady state levels of IGF-II mRNA. The pure (type 2) antiestrogens ICI 182,780 (10−7 M) and ICI 164,384 (10−6 M) blocked the E2- induced increase in IGF-I mRNA levels. Interestingly, 4-hydroxytamoxifen (10−7 M), a documented pure antiestrogen in reproductive tissues, also increased IGF-I mRNA to levels similar to those observed in E2-treated cells. Since E2 was shown to mediate its effects on some target genes through a cAMP-dependent pathway, we studied the interaction between E2 and agents that are known to increase intracellular cAMP. Forskolin (10−8 M) and dibutyryl cAMP (10−3 M) increased IGF-I mRNA levels sixfold, and cotreatment with E2 did not affect these changes, consistent with a possible mediation of the estrogen effect on IGF-I gene expression by cAMP. We conclude that in human osteoblastic cells, the IGF-I gene is a target for estrogen action, suggesting that IGF-I may mediate part of the effects of estrogen in human bone.

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated the structures and properties of alkali halide cluster ions produced by laser vaporization of solid samples. In many alkali halide cluster ions, we observe the appearances of bulk-like characteristics even at sub-nanometer sizes:fcc crystalline structures (including surface terraces), ionic binding, and a susceptibility to common bulk defects such as F and H color-centers. To understand the origins of cluster structures, we have made calculations of ground state energetics, high-temperature molecular dynamics, and the electronic structure of clusters having excess electrons.
