Notes: Conclusion It will be seen that the deflection and moment M x are both zero on edges x=±a, ±3 a,... Hence the above solution is also valid for a plate of finite length simply supported on any two of these edges. So far as the variable thickness version of MacGregor's single concentrated load case is concerned, the loading is written in the Fourier integral form (23) $$Q_{y = a} = \frac{P}{{\pi a}}\int\limits_0^\infty {\cos \gamma xd(\gamma a)}$$ and the deflections are given by the Fourier integral (24) $$\omega = \frac{1}{a}\int\limits_0^\infty {(A_1 e^{\lambda _1 y} + B_1 e^{\lambda _2 y} + C_1 e^{\lambda _3 y} + D_1 e^{\lambda _4 y} )\cos } {\text{ }}\gamma xd(\gamma a).$$ The evaluation of this integral must be performed numerically after the value of the thickness constant b has been selected to best fit the actual variation. This may be done by computing the integrand over a certain range for various values of γa and evaluating the integral in this range by Simpson's rule. Beyond this range, the integrand may be written in simpler form and the integral evaluated in closed form. This involves considerable labor and, since the calculations must be repeated for each value of b selected, they will not be made here. Numerical calculations of Fourier integrals such as the above have been made by Girkmamn 7 and the author8.

Notes: Summary A solution is presented for determining the stresses in an infinite elastic plate containing an elastic rectangular inclusion subjected to a uniform stress field. The bond stresses are obtained by treating the plate and the inclusion separately and satisfying continuity of displacements at discrete points rather than continuously. An example of a square elastic inclusion is treated in detail. Comparison is made between the solution obtained by point-matching techniques and the exact solution for a rigid square inclusion. Excellent agreement is observed. The practical motivation behind this research was the estimation of the bond stresses induced between the fibers and matrix of multifiber composite sheets.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical analysis is made of the stresses induced in thin elastic strips which are bent (by uniform bending moments) into arcs with substantially constant radii of curvatures. Stresses determined experimentally on aluminum and steel strips agree very well with the theory.

Notes: Abstract When a thin elastic strip is bent, anticlastic deforming of the cross section takes place, and the edges move away from the center of curvature. This effect can have serious consequences in several applications. However, it has been found that the magnitudes of the deformations can be very greatly reduced if the concave edges of the bent strip are tapered. The proportions of the tapers have already been worked out theoretically so as to optimize the reduction in anticlastic deformation in any given strip bent to a known radius of curvature. The main purpose of the present paper is to verify the theoretical deformations for optimally tapered strips by experiments using the moiré method.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of the print-quality characteristics of multi-copy printing in which a rigid type font indents several layers of paper and carbon paper resting on a rigid platen. Particular attention is given to determining the contact-pressure distributions for two indenter shapes and for layers of various thicknesses. Stress distributions in the layers are computed and, using a stress-failure mechanism for solid ink, the stress distributions are found to agree well with opticalprint density and reflectance measurements obtained from experiments.

Notes: Abstract Halford's plastic-energy concept for lowcycle fatigue is extended to the medium- and high-cycle ranges. The resulting equations are compared with 74 sets of data in the medium- and high-cycle ranges. The difference in stress between theory and experimental data is less than ±5 percent. The plastic-hysteresis-energy analysis for fatigue is shown to be consistent with the octahedral shear-stress theory. In addition, an improvement is presented for Manson's correlation for the total strain amplitude at 104 cycles.

Notes: Abstract This investigation concerns the application of a special method of successive approximations to the solution of a practically motivated, nonlinear problem of the bending of a uniformly loaded circular plate supported on a concentric circle. Numerical results are obtained for a range of plate-radius/support-radius ratios, and the former are found to be in good agreement with the results of experiments.
