    Notes: Summary. Axial computed tomography (CT) of the pelvis provides useful information in patients with gynaecological malignancies, both for initial staging, to follow disease progression and to assess response to treatment. Additional useful information may be available from reformatted coronal and sagittal images. Knowledge of normal anatomy is essential for correct interpretation of pathology. The anatomy and technique used to acquire the images are described in this paper.

    Notes: Inelastic neutron scattering studies of the transition metal alloy Ni3Al have revealed highly unusual spin-wave behavior, that spin waves have been observed only in a small region around the Brillouin zone center (q(approximately-equal-to)0). Results from calculations of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section based on itinerant electron theory for Ni3Al have led to a relatively simple explanation of this phenomenon. To our knowledge, this is the first calculation of this type for an alloy system. The calculations yield the well-defined Goldstone mode (spin wave) at q=0 but no spin-wave peaks were found for the smallest calculable nonzero momentum transfer, which was just outside the range of q where spin waves were observed experimentally. The reason is simply that the spin wave runs immediately into a region of high density of Stoner excitations (single-particle spin-flip excitations) as q is increased from zero. This system, therefore, represents the extreme limiting case of the itinerant electron theory prediction of spin waves disappearing into the Stoner continuum.

    Notes: Elastic neutron scattering experiments performed over the past two decades have provided accurate information about the magnetic form factors of paramagnetic transition metals. These measurements have traditionally been analyzed in terms of an atomic-like theory. There are, however, some cases where this procedure does not work, and there remains the overall conceptual problem of using an atomistic theory for systems where the unpaired-spin electrons are itinerant. We have recently developed computer codes for efficiently evaluating the induced magnetic form factors of fcc and bcc itinerant electron paramagnets. Results for the orbital and spin contributions have been obtained for Cr, Nb, V, Mo, Pd, and Rh based on local density bands. By using calculated spin enhancement parameters, we find reasonable agreement between theory and neutron form factor data. In addition, these zero parameter calculations yield predictions for the bulk susceptibility on an absolute scale which are in reasonable agreement with experiment in all treated cases except palladium.

    Notes: The quality of groundwater from the chalk beneath the City of London is discussed in relation to the geology and overpumping of the aquifer in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The current quality of the water is describd with reference to analyses carried out, and reasons for variation in quality between boreholes are suggested. Current quality is compared with that of 50 years ago, revealing major changes in the chemical characteristics of the water which are explained in terms of changing groundwater levels.

    Notes: Surprisingly little is known about molecular mechanisms by which nitrogen (N) availability acts to modulate the growth of forest trees. To address this issue, differential display was used in conjunction with filter-based arrays to identify 52 partial cDNA clones that were significantly regulated within days in response to limiting or luxuriant levels of NH4NO3 fertilization in Populus trichocarpa Torr. & Gray × deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh. A subset of these cDNAs also demonstrated shifts in expression patterns in stem-girdled trees, a manipulative physiology technique that disrupts phloem transport. Stem girdling also induced changes in glutamine and asparagine pools which were correlated with the observed changes in expression profiles for these genes. The identity of these genes provides insight into biochemical processes that are altered by N availability in poplar. Carbon–nitrogen interactions appear to figure prominently in the N-response. The gene expression data suggest that N availability modulates the partitioning of C and N resources into metabolic fates that have the potential to alter both wood quality and quantity, including synthesis of vegetative storage proteins, cell wall components, and terpenoids.

    Notes: Abstract. This is a physical analysis of water movement in wheat (Triticum) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) leaves placed in the Scholander pressure chamber. It takes into account the efflux resistances of water movement through the xylem and water flow across the cell membranes. Xylem resistance was estimated using Poiseuille's law.Leaves which had been pressurized in the chamber were embedded, sectioned, examined under a light microscope and photographed. Cells were intact but distorted and xylem vessels were intact. Cells in portions of the blade squeezed by the chamber sealing grommet were crushed, but xylem vessels remained intact.By applying pressure several tenths of a megapascal in excess of the balance pressure, water was forced from each leaf through the severed end which protruded from the chamber. Efflux curves were drawn by plotting the total water expressed as a function of time after the pressure increase. Water efflux from the shortest wheat leaf lasted only 10 min while efflux from the longest continued for up to 40 min. The efflux from a tall fescue leaf which was rehydrated and cut to a shorter length was much more rapid than efflux from the original leaf.Experiments combined with mathematical analysis suggested that the effect of leaf length on efflux is related to a high resistance to water flow through vascular bundles. Xylem resistance would be sufficient to produce this effect if it were 10 times greater than that predicted by Poiseuille's law. Both the observations of water flow from the cut end of the leaf and the mathematical model suggested very little water flows from bundles with vessels of diameter less than 12 μm. The apparent explanation is high resistance to water flow through these small diameter vessels.
