Notes: Abstract A chemical reaction model is discussed whose steady states show the phenomenon of non equilibrium phase transition of first order. If diffusion occurs, coexistence of two or three phases in different domains is possible. Phase diagram with two or three critical points and a triple point is obtained. For plane boundary layers between the domains the coexisting states are found by a construction analogous to the Maxwellian construction of vapor pressure of a Van der Waals gas. For spherical domains the coexistence dates change with radius analogously as vapor pressure of droplets or bubbles.

Notes: Abstract We show how to compute the optical properties (reflection and absorption) of anisotropic semiconductors in the exciton energy region, taking into account polariton and electron-hole coherence effects. The method is applied to a GaAs/Ga1−x Al x As superlattice, and the modifications in the optical properties with respect to GaAs are related to the anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract: We show how to compute the optical functions (reflectivity, transmission, and absorption) of polydiacetylene chains diluted in their monomer matrix exposed to a uniform electric field in the chain direction, in the excitonic energy region. Adopting a model electron-hole potential, we derived an analytical expression for the effective chain susceptibility, which gives the optical functions. The resulting absorption shows excitonic peaks below the gap and Franz-Keldysh oscillations above the gap. The method has been applied for a 3BCMU polydiacetylene chain, showing a good agreement with experimental spectra.

Notes: Abstract: We show how to compute nonlinear optical absorption spectra of an Asymmetric Double Quantum Well (ADQW) in the region of intersubband electronic transitions. The method uses the microscopic calculation of the dephasing due to electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering rates and the macroscopic real density matrix approach to compute the electromagnetic fields and susceptibilities. The polarization dephasing and the corrections to the Rabi frequencies due to the electron-electron interaction are also taken into account. For a proper choice of the QW widths and of the driving fields we obtain electromagnetically induced transparency. This transparency has a very narrow linewidth when a single driving field is applied resonant to the transition between the second and the third subband. In the case of two resonant driving fields or of a driving field resonant between the first and third subband we obtain a large transparency enhancement over the entire absorption spectrum. Results are given for GaAs/GaAlAs QWs and experiments are proposed.

Notes: Summary Using Stahl's coherent wave approach we calculated the linear interband susceptibility near the band gap. The starting point was the «MGM» formula with a smeared-out dipole densityM(r) and the Green's functionG for the effective-mass Hamiltonian with a screened Coulomb potential. The susceptibility so obtained was used for calculating transmission spectra of CdS platelets for energies near the so-called isotropic point lying far below the nearest excitonic resonance. By fitting experimental spectra we determined components of the residual dielectric tensor for polarization of the incident beam perpendicular and parallel to thec-axis, the mixed-mode dipole moment corresponding toB-exciton, and decay radii characterizing transition dipole densities. The established set of parameters determines the dielectric tensor for a quite wide energetic range.

Notes: Summary We show how to compute the optical functions (reflection and transmission) of a semiconductor thin slab, in the vicinity of nearly degenerate exciton states. Additional boundary conditions are not required in the coherentwave-function approach and multiple-polariton effects are included since Maxwell equations are satisfied. When the slab thickness is comparable to the exciton Bohr radius, centre of mass quantization results. When the slab thickness is smaller than the Bohr radius, we obtain, quantum well polaritons. Numerical examples appropriate to GaAs are given.
