    Notes: Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to measure the concentrations of reactive species in an rf (20 kHz) chemical-vapor-deposition reactor as a function of methane flow rate, pressure, current, and added inert gas. The IR measurements have been supplemented by mass spectrometry and optical emission spectroscopy. The reactive hydrocarbon species detected by IR were CH4, C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6, and the free radical CH3. No significant spatial variation in methyl radical concentration was measured between the parallel-plate electrodes under our conditions. The growth rate of amorphous carbon films on the lower (ground) electrode was found to vary linearly with the concentration of CH3 measured close to this electrode, and these results are compatible with a CH3 sticking coefficient of ≤0.02. One-dimensional modeling calculations using the facsimile program were carried out to simulate the variation of the concentration of the principle species with current (electron number density). Satisfactory agreement with the measurements of CH4, CH3, and C2H6 concentrations was obtained when ionization and ion molecule reactions, as well as reactions of neutral species, were included in the chemical model.

    Notes: Infrared diode laser absorption spectra of portions of the 5g–4f, 6h–5g, and 8i–6h Rydberg bands of H2 and D2 have been measured at Doppler limited resolution in low pressure A. C. discharges. The spectra, arising from L uncoupled states of H2 and D2, are assigned using an ab initio polarization model supported by intensity calculations. Details of the different implementations of this polarization model are given in the preceding paper. The most useful was the single channel vibrationally extended (1)/(2) V6 model which became progressively better at higher n (and L). Results of multichannel calculations for a selected set of transitions are also reported.

    Notes: Infrared absorption spectra of magnesium hydride in its 2Σ+ ground state have been measured at Doppler limited resolution in a dc discharge of hydrogen over magnesium. Most of the transitions arise from the fundamental bands of 24MgH and 24MgD, but, in addition, a few lines attributable to 25Mg and 26Mg species have been detected, as well as v=2←1 hot band transitions in 24MgH and 24MgD. Most of the lines are characterized by a doublet splitting due to the electron spin–rotation interaction (γN⋅S) which helps to distinguish them from the broader Rydberg transitions of atomic magnesium observed in the same spectral region. The spectra were analyzed in a combined fit with the FIR pure rotational transitions which leads to an accurate set of molecular parameters either for each vibrational level or as Dunham coefficients. The mass dependence of the molecular parameters is examined in terms of possible breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation.

    Notes: Many vibration–rotation components of the ν2 fundamental of the SiH+3 cation have been measured using diode laser velocity modulation spectroscopy. By comparing the intensities of these components with their nuclear statistical weights, the ion is shown to be planar (D3h). The position of the ν2 band center is 838.0674(7) cm−1 and the ground state rotational constant is B0=5.2153(1) cm−1, r0=0.1462 nm. These results are compared with ab initio calculations.

    Notes: Multistate perturbation theory has been used to assign high resolution Rydberg spectra of H2 and D2 in the infrared. The theoretical model treats interactions between the H+2 ion core and the spatially extended case (d) Rydberg electron in terms of the multipole moments and polarizabilities of H+2. The long range interaction model of Sturrus, Hessels, Arcuni, and Lundeen [Phys. Rev. A 38, 135 (1988)] was refined to include terms up to r−8 in the Rydberg electron radial matrix element. Implementation of the multipole moment–polarization matrix diagonalization model was carried out at three levels: Rotation only ("pure precession''), vibrationally extended, and full multichannel. At each level the calculations were made to order r−4 (low order), r−6 ( (1)/(2) V6) and r−8 (high order). The most generally successful model was found to be the (1)/(2) V6 vibrationally extended model.

    Notes: The concept of the vacuum in quantum field theory is a subtle one. Vacuum states have a rich and complex set of properties that produce distinctive, though usually exceedingly small, physical effects. Quantum vacuum noise is familiar in optical and electronic devices, but in this paper I wish to consider extending the discussion to systems in which gravitation, or large accelerations, are important. This leads to the prediction of vacuum friction: The quantum vacuum can act in a manner reminiscent of a viscous fluid. One result is that rapidly changing gravitational fields can create particles from the vacuum, and in turn the backreaction on the gravitational dynamics operates like a damping force. I consider such effects in early universe cosmology and the theory of quantum black holes, including the possibility that the large-scale structure of the universe might be produced by quantum vacuum noise in an early inflationary phase. I also discuss the curious phenomenon that an observer who accelerates through a quantum vacuum perceives a bath of thermal radiation closely analogous to Hawking radiation from black holes, even though an inertial observer registers no particles. The effects predicted raise very deep and unresolved issues about the nature of quantum particles, the role of the observer, and the relationship between the quantum vacuum and the concepts of information and entropy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Data gathered during a longitudinal study of cardiac output throughout pregnancy, measured by application of impedance cardiography, have been reassessed in respect to individual items of measurement. Examination of the pattern of change in these values did not reveal any flaw in the proposition that impedance cardiography, with the invocation of the Kubicek equation, can confidently be applied in such a study.
