    Notizen: The blood concentrations of disoprofol (Diprivan) after single intravenous doses of 1, 2 or 3 mg/kg have been examined in a subpopulation from previously reported clinical studies. The linear relationship between sleep time and dose could be explained by the linearity of the pharmacokinetics at these doses. After a single injection the awakening concentration was independent of dose, with a mean value of 1.04 μg/ml. No acute tolerance occurred with disoprofol. On repeated 1 mg/kg bolus injections the sleeping time rose initially but stabilised after four doses. The waking concentration was independent of the number of doses administered. The clinical findings fitted an agent with a very rapid distribution phase and a short elimination half-life.

    Notizen: A two-stage propofol infusion combined with fentanyl was wed to maintain anaesthesia during coronary artery surgery in patients with good ventricular function. Whole blood propofol concentrations were measured at frequent intervals; plasma protein binding was measured before, during and after cardiopulmonary bypass. An initial infusion rate of 10 mg/kg/hour provided good protection from the pressor response to sternotomy. A predictable steady state concentration was achieved in the prebypass period with a maintenance infusion rate of 3 mg/kg/hour. The onset of bypass resulted in a small decrease in propofol concentration as a result of haemodilution. Induced hypothermia resulted in an increase in propofol concentration which returned rapidly to the prebypass steady state value during rewarming. The free propofol fraction increased during cardiopulmonary bypass. No patient had any recall of operative events or required inotropic support during weaning from bypass.

    Notizen: Abstract Carbon dioxide (CO2) has been measured at Alert by grab flask sampling since 1975 as part of the World Meteorological Organization's Background Air Pollution Monitoring Program. Deviations of CO2 concentration from the mean annual cycle have previously been attributed to air masses arriving at Alert from the source regions of the industrialized parts of Europe and the Soviet Union. In situ measurements of ambient CO2 and methane (CH4) were made at Alert using an automated gas chromatograph, as part of the Arctic Haze Study during April 1986. The temporal behaviour of CO2 and CH4 during this period was found to be highly correlated with measurements of particulate sulphate and other atmospheric trace species of anthropogenic origin. Examination of calculated air mass back-trajectories provided further evidence that the observed short-term increases in CO2 and CH4 mixing ratios were due to long-range transport from anthropogenic source regions.
