Notes: Abstract Sizes of the second-phase microinclusions typical of III-V, II-VI, and IV-VI semiconductor compounds and their derivatives were theoretically estimated. A formula relating the temperature shift of the internal-friction peak caused by the inclusion-shape changes under the effect of sign-alternating elastic stresses to linear inclusion dimensions was derived. The results were confirmed by data on the low-frequency internal friction in SnTe.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the emergence of a polarization vector field after a ferroelectric sample is rapidly cooled is investigated in two cases, in which the rate of growth of the polarization vector is determined by viscous forces of phonon origin or by the diffusion of charged particles. Analytic expressions are obtained for the rate of growth of the polarization vector and the period of the inhomogeneous phase as a function of the degree of supercooling of the sample. The existence of a slow relaxation process in the domain structure is established and the time dependence of this process is found.

Notes: Abstract The influence of screening by charges bound to surface states and by free charge carriers on the width of a plane-parallel domain structure is investigated. The period of the domain structure is determined on the basis of its identification with the period of the modulated polarization distribution created by the mechanism of destabilization in a ferroelectric crystal of finite dimensions. The influence of the parameters of surface electron states, the nonferroelectric surface layer, and screening by free carriers on the period is described.

Notes: Abstract The presence of impurities in a crystal lattice is one of the causes of anelasticity of solids. Impurities in single crystals may lead to relaxation of the Snoek [1] and Zener [2] type, and affect the level of dislocation internal friction [3]. In polycrystals there is yet another mechanism of relaxation, i.e., the “uphill” diffusion of impurity atoms in a random elastic stress field produced by the deformation of randomly oriented crystals. This mechanism may contribute to the internal friction, elastic aftereffect and transient creep. Diffusion relaxation of this kind was first analyzed by Zener [4] who, having concluded that the difference between the relaxation and nonrelaxation moduli cannot be accurately calculated, estimated the order of magnitude of this difference; he based this estimation on the calculation of a second-order moment function from the reciprocal of the Young's modulus. An implicit assumption in Zener's model is that the elastic strain of a crystal is determined only by the orientation of its crystallographic axes and on the external applied force field, being independent of the strains of adjacent crystals. The inadequacy of such a model for a polycrystal is evident. Moreover, this approach does not allow to obtain the distribution function of relaxation times. An accurate computation of the intensity of relaxation in polycrystals of an arbitrary crystal symmetry, which takes into account pair correlations between the separate grains, is presented in this article.

Notes: Abstract The averaged elastic constants of polycrystals can be found by averaging the stresses (Voigt method [1]) or the strains (Reuss method [2]). Comparison of the elastic moduli, averaged according to Voigt and Reuss, with the experimental values shows that in the first case averaging gives values that are too high, and in the second values that are too low [3]. The reason for this is that direct averaging of the moduli with respect to arbitrary orientations of the crystallites does not take account of correlation effects. There are two ways of allowing for such correlations between polycrystal grains.

Notes: Abstract We consider periodic helical dislocation motion in a para-elastic medium under variable external stresses. The para-elastic properties of the medium are determined by the short-range-order parameters between atoms of the different components of the alloy. The solution of the nonlinear dislocation equation of motion is obtained in four different regions of the amplitude-frequency space. The conditions are indicated under which dislocation motion is viscous and is in the nature of breakaway from the polarization atmosphere.

Notes: Abstract The paper discusses localized electron states in semiconductors near a charged impurity situated in the region of the core of a dislocation forming a deep dislocation zone. The energy spectrum is nondegenerate and constitutes a weakly disorted series of Coulomb levels. The corresponding wave functions are highly anisotropic; their localization radius in the direction perpendicular to the dislocation coincides with the localization radius of the wave function of an electron in the dislocation band. Along the dislocation the wave function decreases at a distance of the order of the effective Bohr radius.

Notes: Abstract In this work we have investigated the internal friction of the alloy Ti50Ni42Co8 with Hf (0.5–0.8 at. %) and Y (0.1 at. %) additives in the temperature range 4.2–293 K at frequencies of 200–600 Hz. We see two peaks on the temperature dependence of the internal friction for the alloy oxidized in an air atmosphere at 1100 K: the first peak at T=40 K is connected with movement of interphase boundaries during the thermoelastic phase transformation occurring according to the scheme B2 → R → B19'; and the second peak at 220–240 K is mainly connected with diffusion under the pressure of hydrogen adsorbed on the oxide particles. The hydrogen penetrates the alloy during sample preparation upon etching and electropolishing in acid solution. Support for the latter hypothesis comes from internal friction vs temperature data for the alloy hydrogen-charged at 1073 K in a gaseous atmosphere and then subjected to vacuum annealing at the same temperature, as well as the results of x-ray diffraction analysis.
