    Notes: A series of biologically active steroids was analyzed by both, ‘filament on’ thermospray using 100% methanol as the mobile phase with ammonium acetate as buffer, and direct chemical ionization with NH3 gas. The mass spectra obtained were very similar. Addition of pyridine instead of ammonium acetate showed selectivity in adding to the steroid molecule.

    Notes: Collisional activation (CA) spectra of the molecular protonated ions generated under fast atom bombardment (FAB) and the molecular ions under electron ionization (EI) from 14 bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids have been compared. The FAB CA spectra show mainly elimination of MeOH from the MH+ ion and no characteristic fragmentation pattern. The EI spectra, on the other hand, show abundant structurally diagnostic ions free of doubly charged ions. The double benzylic cleavage results in bisisoquinoline ions giving rise to the most intense peak in the spectra of all the compounds. Loss of one of the isoquinoline moieties comprising rings C and D and elimination of both the benzyl groups (rings E and F) are characteristic of compounds containing no 1,4-dioxine bridge (1-5). These compounds are also characterized by more abundant (〉50%) [M - Me]+ ions, while the compounds with a 1,4-dioxine bridge give [M - Me]+ ions with 〈50% abundance.

    Notes: The structural analysis of naturally occurring bacterial phospholipids in mixtures by fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry are reported. The bacterial strains examined included several genera of actinomycetes, two strains of Escherichia coli, and one strain each of Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. FAB mass spectrometry proved to be a useful tool for the structural identification of phospholipids in mixtures and provided stable pseudo-molecular ions and characteristic fragment ions which permitted the identification of phosphatidyl ethanolamine and phosphatidyl choline. Information regarding the chain length of the fatty acids, their degree of unsaturation in the chains and the presence of hydroxyl groups was also obtained. The results obtained by FAB mass spectrometry were supported by high-resolution mass spectral data, tandem mass spectrometric studies and FAB mass spectrometry of components which had been separated and partially purified by thin-layer chromatography. Each organism displayed a highly characteristic phospholipid profile suggesting the possible use of FAB mass spectrometry as a method for rapid bacterial detection and identification.
