Notes: Abstract Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of haloperidol were measured in 12 chronic neuroleptic-non-responsive schizophrenic patients after 1 month on 60 mg haloperidol daily and then again after 1 month on 120 mg haloperidol daily. Serum haloperidol and CSF haloperidol rose with increasing dose. Serum and CSF levels were significantly correlated. No clinical improvement was achieved despite the high serum and CSF drug levels.

Notes: Summary The results of the interaction of imipramine, physostigmine and d/l amphetamine in various intravenously administered dosages were studied on the cortical and subcortical electrical activity of cats. Imipramine was shown to cause a cortical synchronization, hippocampal desynchronization, rise in the threshold of electrocortical arousal and limbic convulsive activity which was potentiated by amphetamine. Imipramine increased the amount of physostigmine, but decreased the amount of amphetamine needed for cortical desynchronization. The possible significance of these findings for the neuropsychopharmacological action of imipramine is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract In the course of a previous study on the pharmacokinetics and effects of diazepam in anxiety patients, it was hypothesized that the N-desmethyl derivative is a disturbing agent causing side effects. The present study served to test the validity of this assumption. Diazepam and N-desmethyl-diazepam, the latter as a separate drug, were orally administered to 6 subjects, each drug during 7 days, 15 mg daily in divided doses. Using a randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind design, subjective and observer ratings of a wide range of clinical effects were made. Plasma levels of the benzodiazepine compounds were determined by the G.L.C. method. Results showed that steady state plasma levels were reached on the 5th day; that N-desmethyldiazepam, considering its lower clearance rates, is a longer acting drug than diazepam; that both substances induce hypnosedative effects, mood changes, and somatic disturbances and facilitate sexual behaviour in normals; that desmethyldiazepam is a more effective hypnosedative and mood-lowering substance as compared to equal doses of diazepam. Further comparisons in anxiety patients are recommended in order to find out if the specific desmethyldiazepam effects are therapeutically favourable or disturbing.

Notes: Abstract This study examined current feelings and attitudes toward Holocaust survivors in a sample of 205 Israeli mental health professionals. Subjects were asked to read two vignettes each describing an aged trauma victim who has recently applied for treatment. The first vignette presented a Holocaust survivor and the second a war veteran. The two “patients” were otherwise similar in background and clinical picture. After reading each vignette, subjects were asked to report their feelings toward the patient. Subjects also completed a detailed questionnaire that assessed attitudes on several issues related to the Holocaust. Feelings toward the Holocaust survivor were found to be more intense and more positive than feelings toward the combat veteran. Therapists' attitudes toward Holocaust survivors were also found to be highly and consistently positive. Compared to previous reports, they appear to reflect a change of heart in relation to the past. Therapist background variables were not found to play a major role in determining attitudes toward Holocaust survivors.

Notes: Abstract Applying an analytic approach to the concept of trauma, the authors differentiate trauma from other stress disorders and define trauma as the collapse of the structure of self along all its referential planes, resulting from the encounter of a catastrophic threat and a chaotic response, producing the unique traumatic experience. The post-traumatic state is conceptualized as a reorganizing transitional state, aimed at restoring autonomy, which can proceed by encapsulation only. The post-traumatic stress disorder is regarded as the manifest clinical syndrome of the post-traumatic state. By providing a systematic conceptual framework, the analytic structural approach to trauma allows clearer guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of traumatized patients.
