    Infrared laser velocity modulation spectrum of the ν3 fundamental band of HBBr+ (1999)

    Notes: The infrared absorption spectrum of the ν3 (B–Br stretching) mode of HBBr+ has been observed using a tunable diode laser and velocity modulation spectroscopy. The ion was formed in an ac glow discharge through a flowing mixture of H2 and BBr3. Thirty-three transitions of H11B79Br+ and the same number of lines of the H11B81Br+ isotopomer have been assigned. The band origins and rotational constants are H11B79Br+: ν0=937.5696(13) cm−1, B0=0.461 822(42) cm−1, and B1=0.459 254(41) cm−1. H11B81Br+: ν0=936.0554(11) cm−1, B0=0.460 330(45) cm−1, and B1=0.457 778(43) cm−1. Ab initio calculations of the band origins and the internuclear distances have been performed using the GAUSSIAN 94 package. The calculated values are in highly satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Infrared laser absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with a cold molecular beam of W(CO)6 has yielded the rotationally resolved spectrum of this spherical top molecule near 2000 cm−1. Octahedral splitting has been resolved for the first time and is analyzed using the highly spherical top data system (hTDS) developed at Dijon. In addition, a perpendicular band of the symmetric top molecule W(12C 16O)5 13C 16O was observed in natural abundance. The spectroscopic parameters derived for this molecule, together with electron-diffraction data, provided a value for B0 of the dominant isotopomer, and a check on the consistency of the analysis of the spectra. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An iterative method of fetal cephalometry for use with real time scanners is described using a flow chart. The method is shown to be capable of yielding measurements having a standard deviation of less than 1 mm and we have found it to be superior to the combined A and B scan technique from which it is derived.

    Notes: An attempt has been made to predict a difficult forceps delivery. The duration of the 7 to 10 cm cervical dilatation interval was measured from the completed cervimetric chart in 952 consecutive patients who delivered spontaneously between December 1973 and September 1974. The 7 to 10 cm cervical dilatation intervals of this group were compared with those of 378 consecutive patients in whom forceps were applied with the fetal head in the occipito-anterior position and 83 consecutive patients where Kielland's forceps rotation from the occipito-transverse or occipito-posterior position was performed. The forceps deliveries were graded as ‘easy’, ‘moderately difficult’, or ‘difficult’. In only 5 per cent of the spontaneous delivery group did the 7 to 10 cm cervical dilatation interval exceed two hours. In the occipito-anterior and Kielland's forceps groups an ‘easy’ delivery could be expected if the 7 to 10 cm cervical dilatation interval was less than two hours. The greater this interval increased beyond two hours, the greater was the proportion of ‘moderately difficult’ and ‘difficult’ forceps deliveries.

    Notes: Comparison of the reproducibility of fetal crown rump length measurements (CRL) obtained in a resting state by sonar with a phase focused linear array real time scanner, a real time mechanical sector Scanner, and a static B-scanner did not show any significant differences between machines. Maternal movement was found to produce a change in fetal intrauterine position and to induce fetal movement. Examination following maternal movement was feit to be more representative of clinical conditions and produced greater variability of CRL measurement, shown by all machines to a differing extent, although the differences between machines were not substantial. There is some evidence that the discernment of fetal movement and the quality of fetal echoes obtained with different machines affects the reproducibility of CRL measurement. Thus variability of CRL measurement with every machine is small in terms of gestational age and justifies the use of real time machines to establish gestational age.

    Notes: Summary. Two populations of pregnant Asian and European women were scanned using linear array real-time ultrasound machines. Measurements were made of fetal crown-rump length (CRL) up to 14 weeks gestational age and of biparietal diameter (BPD) up to 20 weeks gestational age. Polynomial growth curves relating CRL and BPD measurements to their gestational ages were fitted to the data by the method of unweighted least squares. There were no significant differences between the Asian and European parameters for the CRL and BPD curves. European nomograms may be used to establish Asian fetal gestational age up to 20 weeks.

    Notes: A method of fetal cephalometry is described which is an advance on the combined A and B scan technique previously used. A flow chart has been prepared which clearly specifies the procedure to be followed. The criteria used when making an estimation are reported. The method is applicable to various types of machine and it can be taught to a good degree of accuracy in a short time to people with limited obstetric knowledge. There may be a significant difference between operators but this difference is roughly the same from patient to patient and decreases with training. It is considered that the chief source of variation is the failure to measure the same diameter on each occasion.
