Notes: Aims. Outpatient maintenance treatment of opiate addicts with codeine/dihydrocodeine is a common approach in the treatment of drug addicts in Germany. This study was carried out to assess possible benefits of codeine maintenance in terms of patients' health stabilization, social rehabilitation and drug consumption. Design. Three-year follow-up study. Setting. Three practices of substituting physicians in large-city areas in Germany. Participants. Of a random sample of 297 people attending for opiate outpatient treatment in 1993, 199 were successfully followed up 3 years later. Measurements. Measures of health, living conditions, employment, criminal activities and drug use were collected at baseline and follow-up. The data were based on standardized interviews and medical examinations by the attending doctors as well as on questionnaires from the patients. Findings. Based on a 67%- follow-up rate, after 3 years of codeine maintenance there was improvement in general health and mental problems. The living and working situation remained more or less unchanged and stabilized at a satisfactory level. The same applies to the consumption of drugs. Conclusion. The patients' progress shown in this study was comparable to that achieved by methadone maintenance in similar geographical regions. Codeine has a weaker pharmacological effect and our results suggest that codeine maintenance treatment deserves more attention and controlled trials to assess the benefits compared with methadone (or other opioids).

Enzyme: Alkaline phosphatase, orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase (EC 3.1.3.1.)
Notes: Summary Guinea pigs well supplied with vitamin C show a linear relation between serum alkaline phosphatase activity and body weight. Investigations in guinea pigs induced to low ascorbic-acid levels by two different procedures (complete and partial deprivation of vitamin C) demonstrated that the activity of the alkaline phosphatase is not generally decreased in the serum of ascorbic-acid-deficient guinea pigs. Decreases of the serum enzyme levels reported in guinea pigs completely deprived of vitamin C, i.e. in acute deficiency, may be due to stress factors.

Unterschwingen.
Notes: Summary Guinea pigs supplied with 5 mg/100 g vitamin in the food seem to be at the marginal substitution for a survival and show no ability to adapt the ascorbic acid metabolism to this low support. Guinea pigs longlastingly (6–8 weeks) supplied with 20 mg/100g or 680 mg/100g vitamin C in the food show the typical symptoms of an evolving adaptation by an overshooting in the course of the ascorbic acid levels in several organs after a switch to an extremely different vitamin C supply.

Notes: Summary Guinea pigs adapted (6–10 weeks) to low supply with vitamin C in the food show the tendency to increased levels of cholesterol and triacylglycerides in the blood and to decreased levels of hemoglobin and of glucose in comparison to guinea pigs adapted to medium and high supply.
