It has been established, using the solid electrolytes method, that the oxygen partial pressures inside a vacuum furnace with a molybdenum heating element and in a closed volume over a carbon surface at 500–1500°C are determined by the equilibria of the reactions Mo+O2 ⇌ MoO2 and C + CO2 ⇌ 2CO, respectively. In this temperature range the value of $$P_{O_2 } $$ varies from 10−28 to 10−7 atm in the former case and from 10−18 to 10−10 atm in the latter. 2. It is shown, on the basis of an investigation into the sintering of a nonstoichiometric oxide Cr2O3, that the vacuum and carbon-containing environments under consideration are suitable for the heat treatment of materials at low oxygen pressures.

    Notizen: Conclusions A study was made of the sintering of chromic oxide with TiO2, Al2O3, MgO, and SiO2 additions in air and under reducing conditions at temperatures of 1300–1750°C. Alumina and magnesia do not intensify the densification of Cr2O3 during calcining in air. The most effective under these conditions is an addition consisting of 5 mole % TiO2 and 2–5 mole % of a 35 wt.% Al2O3 + 65 wt.% SiO2 mixture, which enables specimens to be obtained with an apparent porosity of less than 20% and a linear shrinkage of ∼ 12%. The solid-phase sintering of chromic oxide is improved by the addition of TiO2, which forms with Cr2O3 a limited solid solution. A composite addition apparently initiates sintering with the participation of a liquid phase at temperatures above 1500°C. Under reducing conditions, of all the additions investigated only titania has a beneficial effect.

    Notizen: Conclusions Hot-pressing was used to obtain samples of products of zirconium dioxide with a density of 97–99% of the theoretical value. Their electrical conductivity was considerably greater than in the case of sintered samples with the corresponding stabilizing additive. In the temperature interval 1300–2000°C, it was lower than 1 Ω−1.cm−1 in all cases.

    Notizen: Conclusions In order to obtain a compact corundum briquet, unfired alumina must be pulverized to monocrystals, which is achieved when the content of grains with a diam. of less than 10 μ is more than 95%. Introduction of even a small amount of unpulverized alumina greatly increases the porosity of the annealed material. The briquets should be pressed by the semidry method under a pressure of 300–600 kg/cm2 and fired at 1750°C for 3–6 h. Addition of titanium dioxide to improve the sintering of the briquets is expedient only when the annealing temperature is low (1550°C) and 0.1% of additive is used.

    Notizen: Conclusions Investigations in service and with the regression-correlation analytical method showed that the resistance of experimental blocks, in steel discharge apertures of converters within the limits investigated, is determined mainly by structural characteristics including strength, resistance to abrasion and erosion, pore sizes, and gas permeability. The least wear (0.19 mm per heat) was exhibited by magnesite-chromite refractories made from sinter-active and fine-grained bodies. The wear of the steel discharge blocks is determined mainly by mechanical (abrasion and erosive) action of currents of liquid slag and metal.

    Notizen: Conclusions It was shown in an investigation of the kinetics of the heat-induced shrinkage and deformation of magnesite and chromite and their mixtures that the kinetics is proportional to 1/t2 and that the sintering of the mixtures at a temperature up to 1750°C proceeds by virtue of the elimination of open pores. Chromite added to the magnesite intensifies sintering only when the proportion of chromite is small and is reduced with an increase in the temperature. This decrease depends on the quantity of chrome-spinel (about 2.5% on the maximum practicable concentration) dissolved in the periclase under the conditions concerned. When this proportion of dissolved chrome-spinel is high, the degree of sintering of the mixture decreases. However, at 1750°C the porosity of specimens containing 20% chromite is adequately low, viz. 2.5–3%. A proportion of 20% chromite in the mixture reduces the deformation but the latter increases with a further increase in the chromite content and is at a maximum with 40% chromite. This variation of the deformation arises from changes in the number of phases and in the total length of the interphase boundaries in the specimen. The calculated diffusion coefficients of magnesite, chromite, and a 20/80 mixture of these materials provide evidence that the sintering and deformation of chromite and its mixtures with magnesite proceed by virtue of the diffusion of vacancies, the rate of diffusion being dictated by the mobility of the oxygen ion which diffuses more slowly than the other ions.

    Notizen: Conclusions The Snigirev Division of the Vnukovo Refractories Plant has started producing corundum chamotte with a water absorption not above 3% from commercial alumina for the manufacture of corundum refractories for applications in metallurgy and other branches of industry. The principle of briquetting formed the basis for a production technology of corundum refractories in which firing at 1700°C gives a product of a porosity of 17–20% and a cold crushing strength of 800–1300 kg/cm2 for an Al2O3 content of over 98%. The porosity can be reduced by 3–4% by firing at 1750°C.

    Notizen: Conclusions Using actively sintering bodies it is possible to make high-density magnesite-chromite products. There is typically a very low porosity and high strength at ordinary and high temperatures. The thermalshock resistance of these products in conditions of 1300°C air is the same as for industrial products MKhS and PShS. Compared with these, the high-density products have a higher deformation temperature and greater rigidity.

    Notizen: Conclusions An investigation was carried out of the influence of certain additives on the sintering of chromic oxide. In an air medium, chromic oxide does not sinter at all without an additive. It achieves slight sintering with added TiO2 and a higher degree of sintering when aluminosilicates are added. The effect of TiO2 on the sintering process is significantly more marked in a reducing medium. It was established that a relation exists between the degree of sintering and the change in the lattice parameters of the Cr2O3 caused by the addition of TiO2, and between the degree of sintering of aluminosillicate-containing chromic oxide and the percent glass-forming silica in the additive. Chromic oxide specimens were produced to a porosity of about 15%.
