Notes: Summary N methacryloyl-S-methyl-L-cysteine (SMC) homopolymer along with a copolymer with methacrylic acid were prepared in the purpose of studying their complexation with Pd(II). The circular dichroism study showed that the binding of SMC residue to a polymeric chain does not change the coordination donor set of Pd complexation, i.e. ¦N, s ¦. The number of side chains per metal ion involved in the complexation depends on the molar fraction of SMC in the case of the copolymer and on the SMC/Pd ratio for both homopolymer anc copolymer. The variation of viscosity when adding Pd(II) suggests the formation of intramolecular loops.

Notes: Summary The radical copolymerization of N-vinyl-tert-butylcarbamate (NVTBC) with styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl-pyrrolidone and 4-vinyl-pyridine was studied at 50–60° C in toluene, methanol or dioxane, using azo- bis- isobutyronitrile as the initiator. The reactivity ratios of the monomers were calculated from monomer feed and copolymers composition data using the Fineman-Ross method. The copolymers were hydrolysed in CH3COOH/HCl mixtures at room temperature in order to obtain vinylamine containing copolymers. The extent of the solvolysis is dependent on the nature of the comonomer. The solvolysed copolymers bearing NH2 groups were titrated by HCl in 2M NaCl medium in order to have more informations on the repartition of the NVTBC residues.

Notes: 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEM)  -  N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) copolymers were synthesized and characterized. The copolymerization parameters were determined: rVP = 0,61, rDMAEM = 11,41. The tacticity of DMAEM sequences and the distribution of monomer units were estimated. Then, the experimental conditions for the quaternization of the copolymers with alkyl bromides were defined. The modified copolymers were characterized and the mechanism of the quaternization reaction was studied via potentiometry.

Notes: N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone  -  2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate copolymers were quaternized with octyl bromide in tetramethylene sulfone. The quaternization kinetics was studied, varying the concentrations of reagents and the composition of copolymers. The initial rate constant is not disturbed by the concentration of reagents, but it is by the initial copolymer composition: the higher the initial octyl bromide concentration, the higher the maximal conversion rate. These kinetic results were interpreted, observing the influence of the steric effect, the electrostatic effect and the effect of solvation. The kinetic models proposed in the literature were applied to our data and discussed. None of them describes perfectly the behaviour of our system.

Notes: N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP)  -  2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEM) copolymers were quaternized with octyl, dodecyl or hexadecyl bromide. The behaviour of the modified copolymers in aqueous solutions was studied by viscosimetry. As typical of classical polyelectrolytes, by increasing the ionic strength of the solutions, their viscosity decreases. Since the DMAEM mole fraction in the modified copolymers is low, the pH of the solutions does not have a great influence on the extension of the macromolecules. The influence of the size of the alkyl chains and of the mole fraction of quaternized units were studied: the formation of hydrophobic microdomains is easier for copolymers which have a low fraction of long quaternized units than for copolymers with a high mole fraction of short quaternized units.
