Notes: [Auszug] These data suggest that /?-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), which depletes brain serotonin7, should facilitate male copulatory behaviour as it does female oestrous behaviour8. Evidence that this drug facilitates mounting behaviour in male rats2'9"12 supports this hypothesis. But another report13 ...

Notes: The ArgumentEuropean ethology and North American comparative psychology have been the two most prominent approaches to the study of animal behavior through most of the twentieth century. In this paper I analyze sets of popular articles by ethologist Nikolaas Tinbergen and psychologist Frank Beach, in an effort to understand the contrasting rhetorical styles of the two. Among the numerous ways in which Tinbergen and Beach differed were with respect to expressing the joy of research, the kind of scientific approach adopted, their treatment of animals, their sense of history, and the types of illustrations they chose. In general, Tinbergen‘s articles placed him closer to nature and Beach‘s more in the tradition of dispassionate scientific inquiry. These differences in rhetoric may have been one factor in the greater success of ethology after World War II.

Notes: Summary Copulation was observed in each of 21 male rats on two tests following ingestion of alcohol and on two tests following ingestion of water. Latencies to the first mount, intromission, and ejaculation were all increased by alcohol, as were the mean interval between successive intromissions and the length of the post-ejaculatory refractory period. Mount frequencies were increased. Accompanying these retardation effects was a sensitization-like effect-a decrease in the number of intromissions preceding ejaculation. This effect of alcohol on intromission frequency was discussed in relation to the well-documented “enforced-interval effect”.

Notes: Abstract Five experiments were conducted in order to assess the effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors on the copulatory behavior of male rats. Copulatory behavior was studied after administration of a) three injections of 25 mg/kg iproniazid, b) single injections of 50 and 100 nig/kg iproniazid, c) single injections of 50 and 100 mg/kg nialamide, and d) single injections of 25 and 50 mg/kg pargyline. All treatments produced some retardation of copulatory behavior, although not all measures were affected by all drugs. A total of 21 statistically significant effects appeared. All were in the direction of retardation. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that high brain monoamine levels inhibit copulatory behavior in male rats.

Notes: Abstract The literature on nonreproductive behavior includes much theory and many data showing preferential association with and treatment of kin. However, there are both costs and benefits to mating with kin. This leaves the experimenter with neither firm predictions nor tightly constrained interpretations of data. The mixed nature of the data on kinship and reproductive behavior in muroid rodents suggests the existence of a balance between the costs and the benefits of inbreeding and outbreeding.

Notes: Summary Limitations on male capacity may be important to the evolution of mating strategies and behavior. Sperm counts in successive ejaculates of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) decreased progressively through six ejaculations and remained depressed the following day. Males were as effective in inseminating females in cycling estrus with their second two ejaculates as with their first two and as effective in inseminating postpartum females with their fifth as with their first. In sperm competition situations males competed with rested males as effectively with their fourth, fifth, and sixth ejaculates as with their first. Thus, although sperm counts decrease in successive ejaculates, males suffer no apparent functional deficiency as long as they continue ejaculating. It is not clear whether or not deer mice are “honest salesmen” but they appear to be “honest ejaculators” and usually are “honest intromitters.”

Notes: Summary Six experiments were conducted to determine the effects of mode of estrus (cycling versus postpartum) and intervals between matings on sperm competition in deer mice. When there was no lengthy interval between matings by different males, sperm competition matings by different males, sperm competition with females in postpartum estrus was the same as that with females in cyclin estrus (i.e., no male order effect). Imposition of 4 h delays between males did not engender a mating advantage when females were in postpartum estrus. When 4 h intervals were imposed with females in cycling estrus and tests were begun relatively early in the dark phase, there was a secondmale advantage with respect to the number of pups sired. When minimal delays were imposed with females in cycling estrus the time of testing within the dark phase did not affect the pattern of sperm competition, but larger litters were born following matings later in the dark phase. When 4 h delays were imposed with the first male mating late in the dark phase a first-male advantage resulted. It is hypothesized that for females in cycling estrus there is a period of peak fertilizability. There is no straight-forward effect of delays between males per se; rather, effects must be analyzed in relation to the period of peak fertilizability. The timing of insemination appears less critical for postpartum females.

Notes: Summary 1. The objective of this research was to determine whether the multiple ejaculation pattern of golden hamsters might have a functional consequence in increasing the percentage of offspring sired by a male when the female partner subsequently mates with a second male. 2. A risk of displacement by a second male was demonstrated to exist. When two male hamsters mated for five ejaculatory series each, a male was able to sire significantly more offspring when mating second than when mating first. Thus, hamster compulatory plugs do not provide complete protection against subsequent sperm displacement. 3. Prolonged copulation can provide protection against sperm displacement. Prolongation afforded no protection to cream males. However, when agouti males mated to satiety prior to a mating by a cream male, the agouti males sired more of the offspring than when they attained just one or five ejaculations. 4. The primary mechanism underlying the protective effects of prolongation of copulation was found related to copulations with sperm transfer, presumably stemming from the relative concentrations of sperm from the two males. Neither the mere passage of time nor copulation by a vasectomized male conferred a protective effect. 5. Viewed as a reproductive strategy in social context, the multiple ejaculatory pattern can be seen as having functional significance in maximizing individual fitness.
