Tetrachloro- and Tricyanochlorophosphate(III). Structural Pictures of a Half-way Stopped AdditionPCl3 and P(CN)3 add the chloride ion of a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt or a crown ether-alkali metal salt to yield within the limits of an equilibrium tetrachloro- and tricyanochlorophosphate(III) respectively. Crystalline salts of these anions may be isolated with [Et4N+] or [(Ph3P)2CH+] as counter ions. The X-ray analysis of PCl4- shows it to display an essentially ψ-trigonal bipyramidal structure, which, however, is remarkably unsymmetrical with one relatively short and one very long axial P—Cl bond (respectively 4 and 40% longer than in PCl3). A similar though somewhat less pronounced axial unsymmetry is also observed for P(CN)3Cl- (bonds respectively 7 and 28% longer than in P(CN)3 and PCl3). These anions considered together with the previously published structures of PBr4- and P(CN)2Br2- (axial bonds which are respectively 14 and 18% longer in the former and both 12% longer in the latter than in PBr3) are found to belong to a continuous structural sequence, which represents a trough in the energy hypersurfaces of the systems PX3 + X- ⇄ PX4- (which are assumed to be comparable). The reaction path of nucleophilic addition and furthermore nucleophilic substitution at PX3 molecules should follow this trough.
Notizen:
