Notizen:
p-Polyphenylens were synthesized from benzene with the catalytic systems AlCl3/CuCl2/H2O and FeCl3/H2O under various conditions; also o,m,p-polyphenylenes were synthesized from biphenyl with the catalytic system AlCl3/CuCl2. A method was described for estimating the amounts of polyphenylenes and oligophenylenes, formed during the polymerization of benzene. The synthesized polyphenylenes were characterized by their melting points, elemental analysis, IR-analysis and X-ray studies. The polyphenylenes, except for the material synthesized with FeCl3/H2O, are crystalline. The materials synthesized with FeCl3/H2O were amorphous and contained a greater amount of chlorine. The polyphenylenes exhibit electrical conductivities, according to which they can be classified as semiconductors. The importance of three factors, which also influence the value of the electrical conductivity of the polyphenylenes, namely the crystallinity, the presence of chlorine and the structure (p- or o,m,p) of the polyphenylenes is stressed.
