Notizen: Samples were taken from particular sites of the tibialis cranialis (extensor), flexor digitalis medialis (flexor) and pectineus (adductor) muscles of 27 dogs of different breeds—German shepherd. Spanish greyhound, Spanish mastiff and Iberian hound. Samples, which were taken from right and left limbs, were subjected to histochemical analysis using ATPase (pH 9.4, 4.6 and 4.2) and NADH-tr. Fibre population was assessed using an IBAS-2 Kontron image analyser.

Notizen: The effect of exercise training on the longissimus muscle types was investigated in rats. There were four groups of rats, each exposed to exercise of equal intensity, but of varying duration. A segment of the longissimus muscle between the 2nd and 4th lumbar vertebrae was used for muscle fiber classification with histochemical ATPase classification. With exercise there were no significant changes in the percentage of the muscle comprised of type I muscle fibers. There was, however, significant increase in the percentage of type II A fibers. This paralleled a decrease in type II B fibers. The percentage of FG fiber types decreased significantly in all groups studied. There was a correlation between intensity and duration of exercise and the degree of decrease seen in the latter fiber types. An increase in oxidative muscle capabilities was evidenced by the changes observed in the subtypes of class II fibers.

Notizen: The results from a recent study by Bruce and Schurg (1990) indicate that the gluteus medius (Gm) of the horse is a complex muscle subdivided by an internal tendinous sheet into two regions (dorsal and ventral) which may subserve different functions. In the present study, both regions were found to contain a similar proportion of histochemically-determined muscle fibre types. Fibre type composition did not generally vary over the length of the muscle at the same relative depth. In contrast, there was a significant tendency for the percentage of type I fibres to increase gradually in accordance with depth. These histochemical results do not suggest that the two regions of the Gm assume distinct functional roles; they do, however, indicate that at a given relative depth the muscle fibre type distribution is relatively uniform over the length of the muscle. Nevertheless, care should be exercised in sampling and interpreting data obtained from limited biopsy of equine Gm, due to the substantial histochemical variation of fibre type compositon as a function of sampling depth.

Notizen: The histochemical characteristics of skeletal muscle were assessed using a range of samples from 7 appendicular muscles taken from adult mixed-breed dogs (1.5 to 3 years of age). Two slow-twitch fiber subtypes (IA and IB) and three II subtypes (IIA, IIB and IIC) were identified according to myofibrillar myosin adenosine triphosphatase reaction after acid and alkaline preincubation. Type IIB fibers were not found in all muscles, and were only biologically significant in m. semiten-dinosus. The metabolic potential of these fibers is fairly similar to that of IIA fibers, but significantly different to that of IIB fibers in other mammals, suggesting that they may be designed to play a different functional role during locomotion. All canine muscle fibers have moderate to high oxidative capacity, which may be related to the extraordinary athletic capability of the species.

Notizen: Radiographic projection of a median section of the brain and skull in goatThis study, based on three goats, provides a radiographic projection of a median section of the brain and the skull. The method allows a topographic correlation of brain structures with the skull and surrounding osseous structures. A standard skull position, with the basic horizontal plane passing through the external acoustic meatus, and parallel to the floor of the skull, results in a method of localizing brain structures in specific transverse planes. This stereotaxic method allows investigators to account for variability in topography between animals in the localization of brain structures through external morphology.

Notizen: The through-space transmission of 19F-19F couplings is analyzed in a model compound employing inner projections of the polarization propagator, at the RPA and monoexcited CI levels, using an INDO ground state wave function. The emphasis of this work is (1) to study the dependence of the through-space transmitted component of such couplings on the interatomic F-F distance, and (2) to obtain an intuitive, although rigorous, model to describe the through-space transmission that could be used as a complementary tool in experimental measurements. In the first case an exponential decay is found and experimental data for different compounds are found to fit this curve fairly well. In the second case, localized molecular orbitals representing chemical functions are plotted, and the way in which they influence the through-space transmission is analyzed at the perturbator level as well as in inner projected polarization propagator terms. The important role played by the anti-bonding orbitals and the lone pairs of the F atoms is discussed.

Notizen: An extension of the IPPP (inner projections of the polarization propagator) method to theoretically analyze transmission mechanisms of indirect nuclear spin-spin couplings is presented. The localization technique used is modified so that all the canonical molecular orbitals of a compound may be localized to represent chemical bonds, lone pairs, and the corresponding antibonding molecular orbitals. These localized molecular orbitals, together with the polarization propagator, are used to obtain an intuitive picture of how a coupling is generated as a sum of terms, each one consisting of two particle-hole single excitations. This picture can be used to identify underlying transmission mechanisms and quantitatively evaluate their importance toward the total coupling. The paramagnetic spin-orbit and the spin-dipole interactions are studied in detail.
