Notes: With high quality spectral data, we have observed departures from the soft collision model for translational motion, in the transition region from Doppler broadening to Dicke narrowing. The departures are in agreement with theoretical calculations based on the Boltzmann equation. The implications of the results concerning the dynamics of fluids are discussed. In addition we show that the mass diffusion constant describes the translational diffusion of the optical coherence and we give precise measurements of the broadening coefficients of the Q(0) to Q(6) lines.

Notes: This article describes a pressure-modulator instrument which is designed to measure trace constituents of the stratosphere from a balloon platform at an altitude of about 40 km. Double-sided limb-scanning allows profiling below the instrument and a direct determination of the instrument attitude from the radiance data. The instrument is described in detail and the methods of radiance measurement and calibration are discussed. Some of the supporting laboratory measurements are described. A concentration profile of carbon monoxide from 20 to 45 km is presented as an example of the results of the first series of flights.

Notes: This paper examines the recent emergence of integrated coastal zone management as an application for the gathering, management and distribution of geospatial data. The requirements of a geospatial database of the coastal zone are outlined and the contribution of digital photogrammetry is examined. A saltmarsh monitoring project, which uses digital photogrammetry and was initiated by the authors, is described

Notes: Using a difference frequency spectrometer we have measured the Q(2) to Q(38) 2000←0110,Σ←Π transitions of carbon dioxide at 296 K and pressures up to 15 kPa. These low pressure spectra were analyzed using both the Voigt model, and an empirical line shape that blends together a hard collision model and a speed dependent Lorentzian profile. The broadening coefficients were obtained with an accuracy of 1% or better. The low density or first order low pressure line mixing parameters were also determined. We have compared both our measured low pressure line-mixing parameters and the complete band spectrum at high pressures with those predicted by a relaxation matrix calculated from an EPG fitting law. Spectra at the highest pressures were recorded using both the difference frequency spectrometer and an FTIR spectrometer, the temperature for the latter experiments being 303 K. The vibrational band intensity and linear pressure shift of the branch as a whole were also measured. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present measurements of the shifts and widths of the rovibrational lines of the fundamental band of CO highly diluted in He and Ar at 296 K. The shifts are decomposed into parts odd and even in the line number, m. These are then compared with close coupled calculations carried out with the best known interaction potentials. There is general agreement between the calculated and measured values of the broadening and shifting. Furthermore, the results illustrate that the decomposition of the shifts into parts, odd and even in m, is a powerful tool for separating out the relative contributions of the isotropic and anisotropic part of the interaction to the shifts and which part needs to be corrected if there is a discrepancy. Thus, shift measurements can be added to the list of experiments that may be used to determine reliable interaction potentials. The results also show, given a potential, that close coupled calculations are accurate and could be used to confirm or establish empirical models of the temperature dependence of the broadening or shifting, etc. Such modeling is important at atmospheric physics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] There are believed to be two water vapour sources in the upper atmosphere, both of which are subject to tropospheric influences. The first is direct injection by mechanisms at present poorly understood but probably involving the Hadley cell circulation in low latitudes and the 'tropopause gap' in ...
