Abstract Transition metal carbide clusters are produced in the gas phase with a laser vaporization cluster source and characterized by various mass spectrometry and laser techniques. Two related classes of clusters are studied, those with an M8C12 stoichiometry and those with an M14C13 stoichiometry. This review describes the conditions necessary to produce these clusters and experiments undertaken to measure their properties, including the measurement of mass spectral distributions, laser and collisional dissociation experiments, gas phase chemisorption, and photoionization experiments. Theoretical descriptions of the bonding in these systems are also discussed as are the comparisons of the results of theory to experimental measurements. The promise for isolation of metal carbide clusters in macroscopic quantities is explored.
