    Notes: Abstract Inhibition of the corrosion of a carbon steel (0.4% C) by 2-hexadecyl imidazoline and 2-hexadecyl imidazole has been evaluated by electrochemical techniques and correlated with surface tension measurements. Plots of inhibitor efficiency versus surfactant concentration produce S-shaped curves which are assumed to represent adsorption isotherms. A sharp increase in slope was observed at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration. This increase in slope is accounted for by changes in conformation of the adsorbed molecules: horizontal orientations (with respect to the surface) at lower concentrations reflecting cathodic behaviour and perpendicular orientations at the higher concentrations reflecting mixed cathodic and anodic behaviour. At increasing concentrations the inhibitory effect remained constant, suggesting complete saturation of the surface in a bilayered arrangement. Electrochemical impedance measurements, carried out for concentrations greater than the critical micellar concentration, corroborate this assumption: the inhibitors form a thick but adherent micellar film which acts as a diffusion barrier.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Different chemical conversion treatments have been applied to a XC 38 carbon steel. Using electro-chemical methods (steady-state cathodic polarization curves, polarization resistance measurements) it has been shown that all the treatments reduce the corrosion rate of the metallic substrate; nevertheless, great differences in the degree of protection provided were found depending upon the treatment used. A physico-chemical analysis of the layers resulting from different treatments has been carried out using chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been shown that, in the case of zinc phosphatation, there is formation of a solid solution FexZn3−x(PO4)2-4H2O(1⩽x⩽3); in the case of zinc phosphatation with a potassium monofluorophosphate post-treatment there is formation of a compound with average stoichiometric formula Zn0.5K1.1PO3.35F0.4.
    Notes: Résumé A l'aide de méthodes électrochimiques stationnaires (relevé des courbes courant-tension, mesure de la résistance de polarisation) nous avons étudié le comportement en milieu NaCl 3% d'un acier au carbone (XC 38) ayant subi une phosphatation cristalline ou amorphe puis un post-traitement par les monofluorophosphates de zinc ou de potassium. Nous avons montré que tous les traitements rédusaient la corrosion du substrat métallique mais à des degrés différents selon le type de traitement. L'analyse physico-chimique des couches issues des différents traitements a été conduite par analyse chimique, microscopie électronique à balayage et spectroscopie de photoélectrons (ESCA). Dans le cas de la phosphatation cristalline nous avons montré qu'il y a formation d'une solution solide FexZn3−x(PO4)2-4H2O(1⩽x⩽3); un post-traitement par le monofluorophosphate de potassium entraine la formation d'un composé de formule moyenne Zn0.5K1.1PO3.35F0.4.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract XC 38 carbon steel samples pretreated in various ways have been coated with a glycerylphthalate-type paint. The behaviour of the painted samples in 3% NaCl solutions has been investigated by both steady-state (cathodic polarization curves and polarization resistance measurements) and transient (impedance measurements) electrochemical methods. Impedance measurements allow us to follow the evolution, as a function of immersion time, of the parameters influencing the corrosion performance of the different coatings. The favourable effects of prepaint surface treatments have been exhibited for long immersion times in aggressive media, particularly of those based on monofluorophosphate post-treatments applied on zinc phosphated carbon steel.
    Notes: Résumé A l'aide de méthodes électrochimiques stationnaires (relevé des courbes courant-tension, mesure de la résistance de polarisation) et transitoires (mesure de l'impédance électrochimique) nous avons étudié le comportement en milieu NaCl 3% d'un acier au carbone (XC 38) ayant subi divers pré-traitements avant l'application d'une couche de peinture glycérophtalique. Les mesures d'impédance électrochimique ont permis la détermination de l'évolution au cours du temps des paramètres influant sur les performances de tenue à la corrosion des divers revêtements. On a ainsi mis en évidence — pour de longs temps d'immersion dans le milieu aggressif (〉50 h) — l'effet bénéfique des traitements avant peinture et en particulier celui des post-traitements à base de monofluorophosphates, des surfaces ayant subi une phosphatation cristalline.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The study of zinc and potassium monofluorophosphates as inhibitors of the corrosion of a XC 38 carbon steel, using a rotating disc electrode in contact with a 3% NaCl solution, has been carried out. Inhibitive efficiencies have been determined by both indirect electrochemical methods (cathodic polarization curves and polarization resistance measurements) and by a direct method based on titration of dissolved iron. Zinc monofluorophosphate appeared to be a more efficient inhibitor than potassium monofluorophosphate over a wide concentration range, the maximum efficiency being about 98% and 88% respectively. The study of zinc chloride and potassium sulphate for comparative purposes, has suggested the role played by the monofluorophosphate anion PO3F2− in the overall inhibition process.
    Notes: Résumé Nous avons effectué l'étude des monofluorophosphates de zinc et de potassium en tant qu'inhibiteurs de la corrosion d'une électrode à disque tournant d'acier au carbone (XC 38) en contact avec une solution à 3% de chlorure de sodium. Les efficacités inhibitrices ont été déterminées à la fois par des méthodes de type électrochimique (relevé des courbes courant-tension stationnaires) et de type gravimétrique (dosage du fer passé en solution). Le monofluorophosphate de zinc se révèle plus efficace que le monofluorophosphate de potassium dans un large domaine de concentration, les maxima d'efficacité étant de l'ordre de 98% et 88% respectivement. L'étude, menée dans un but comparatif, sur des solutions de chlorure de zinc et sulfate de potassium a permis de mettre en évidence que l'ion Po3F2− jouait un rôle dans le processus global d'inhibition.

    Description / Table of Contents: Resume Les sondeurs à sédiments (sub bottom profilers) mis au point dans les années soixante n'ont pas connu au début d'application très généralisée. Depuis quelques années des appareils nouveaux donnant de meilleures pénétrations dans les sédiments doivent entraîner un emploi plus systématique dans les prospections à caractères sédimentologiques. Après avoir rappelé l'évolution et insister sur l'originalité des sondeurs à sédiments, on examinera les divers aspects sous lesquels doit être abordée l'interprétation: géométrie des horizons, corrélations lithologiques, rapports entre image réfléchie et dynamique sédimentaire. Dans une zone limite, 15 km2 environ, 90 prélèvements par bennes et 12 carottes, ont permis d'établir une carte détaillée des faciés Cette carte sera comparée avec divers documents découlant de l'étude de la réflexion (5 kHz). Une première approche concerne la répartition de sismofaciès caractéristiques choisis sur l'ensemble de la prospection sismique. Ainsi cinq échotypes ont été retenus. Après comparaison nous pouvons établir une corrélation entre la nature et l'état de surface du sédiment, et l'écho sismique correspondant. Dans un second stade nous étudions la variation de réflectivité en liaison avec les divers faciès sédimentaires. Les coefficients de réflexion relatifs sont mesurés, soit sur le premier pic, soit sur une durée plus longue (1 ms), par intégration du signal refléchi. Ces deux voies aboutissent à deux cartes de répartition du coefficient de réflexion relatif.
    Notes: Abstract Sub-bottom profilers which were worked out in the sixty years did not first come into general use. These last few years, some new devices have been developed with most sediment penetration, which are to be more systematically used in sedimentological prospecting. After reviewing the sub-bottom profilers development, with laying stress on their originality, the different points of view of the interpretation are considered: layers geometry, lithological correlations, relations between the reflected picture and the depositional dynamics. In a bounded area, about 15 km2, 90 bucket dredged samples and 12 core samples allowed a detailed mapping of the facies. This map is compared with different data from the seismic reflection investigation (5 kHz). A first approach concerns the distribution of some typical sismofacies selected on the whole seismic prospection. Thus five echotypes were picked out. By comparing, we can make a correlation between the character and surface feature of the sediment, and the corresponding seismic echo. In a second stage, the reflectivity change is considered in relation with the different sediment facies. The relative reflection coefficients are measured, either on the first peak, or on a longer time interval (1 ms), by integrating the seismic pulse. Both ways result in two maps of the relative reflection coefficient distribution.
