    Notes: This paper addresses the problem of superadiabatic motion of ions interacting resonantly with waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF). In the classical quasilinear treatment of ion cyclotron resonance heating, the phase difference between the wave and the cyclotron motion of the particles must be assumed to be completely uncorrelated between two resonance crossings. However, beyond a critical particle energy, the so-called adiabatic barrier, this assumption is no longer valid, and particles exhibit superadiabatic behavior. In order to study in detail the influence of superadiabatic motion on the efficiency of ICRF heating the MOKA code was developed. In the MOKA code, complete trajectories of fast particles in a toroidal plasma magnetic equilibrium modified by a realistic radio-frequency perturbation are calculated. This paper shows that the location of the adiabatic barrier depends strongly on the particle orbits. Also, the injected toroidal spectrum is of high importance for determining the correlation effects, while at high energies, collisions are found to play a negligible role. A realistic description of this adiabatic barrier is given for an ICRF minority heating pulse of Tore Supra [J.     Notes: Positron emission tomographic measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were used to investigate central nervous system correlates of fear and anxiety. Volunteers with symptomatic snake phobia were studied while exposed to visual phobogenic, aversive, and neutral stimuli. Anxiety ratings and the number of nonspecific electrodermal fluctuations increased as a function of phobic stimulation. Phobic, compared to neutral and aversive, stimulation elevated rCBF in the visual associative cortex. The basal ganglia were not activated more by phobic than aversive or neutral stimulation. However, cortical and thalamic rCBF were always correlated during phobic but not aversive or neutral stimulation. This indicates that the thalamus could be a relay station for phobic stimulus processing and affect.

    Notes: The health-related quality of life in a Swedish sample of HIV-infected persons The purposes of the present study are (1) to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the subjective health status in a sample of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons (2) to relate the results to different population groups and (3) to investigate the relationship of medical and demographic variables with HRQOL. A total of 72 HIV-infected men were included. They answered the Swedish health-related quality of life questionnaire and the health index. Demographic and medical data were obtained from the medical records. The data collection took place before entering a therapeutic HIV vaccine trial. The results showed a more negative impact on the HRQOL and subjective health status in the HIV-positive subjects, compared with male population groups. The dimensions of emotional well-being were most affected. When comparisons were made according to the medical and demographic variables for different subgroups within the HIV sample, differences in the physical-dimension scales were most prominent. Symptomatic HIV infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), anti-retroviral treatment, sick leave or disability pension, low income and basic education were associated with worse HRQOL and health status. In conclusion, it is of utmost importance to take into account, aspects of the patients’ emotional well-being in nursing, as well as in medical care and interventions. Moreover, individualized caring programs are needed because the disruptions in HRQOL fluctuated within the HIV sample.

    Notes: We measured the regional cerebral oxidative metabolism (rCMRO2) with positron emission tomography in normal healthy volunteers in three different stages: rest, tactile learning, and tactile recognition of complicated geometrical objects. The frequency of manipulatory movements during tactile recognition was twice that of tactile learning. Tactile recognition with the right hand increased rCMRO2 in six prefrontal cortical areas, bilaterally in the supplementary motor areas, the premotor areas and supplementary sensory areas, in the left primary motor and primary sensory area, in the left anterior superior parietal lobule, bilaterally in the secondary somatosensory area, the anterior insula, lingual gyri, hippocampus, basal ganglia, anterior parasagittal cerebellum, and lobus posterior cerebelli. These structures have in other studies been found to participate in manipulatory movements and analysis of somatosensory information. Tactile learning increased rCMRO2 in the same structures as did tactile recognition. Thus we found no differences in the anatomical structures participating in storage and retrieval. However the rCMRO2 increases in the left premotor cortex, supplementary motor area, and left somatosensory hand area were larger during tactile recognition in accordance with the higher frequency of manipulatory movements and higher flux of somatosensory information from the periphery during recognition. Despite this the rCMRO2 was significantly higher in the neocerebellar cortex during tactile learning. Since there were no learning effects on the manipulatory movements, this extra metabolic activity in the lateral cerebellum was attributed to energy demanding processes associated with climbing fibre activity during storage of somatosensory information.

    Notes: The structure of the title compound, C28H38O18S, has been determined. The torsion angles of the glycosidic linkage in the non-reducing disaccharide, φH and φH′, have values of 3 and 53°, respectively. The latter torsion angle is in agreement with the exo-anomeric effect, whereas the former shows an eclipsed conformation. Both glycopyranosyl residues adopt a slightly distorted chair conformation.

    Notes: The crystal structure of methyl 4-O-β-L-fucopyranosyl α-D-glucopyranoside hemihydrate C13H24O10·0.5H2O is organized in sheets with antiparallel strands, where hydrophobic interaction accounts for partial stabilization. Infinite hydrogen-bonding networks are observed within each layer as well as between layers; some of these hydrogen bonds are mediated by water molecules. The conformation of the disaccharide is described by the glycosidic torsion angles: φH = −6.1° and ψH = 34.3°. The global energy minimum conformation as calculated by molecular mechanics in vacuo has φH = −58° and ψH = −20°. Thus, quite substantial changes are observed between the in vacuo structure and the crystal structure with its infinite hydrogen-bonding networks.

    Notes: Yttrium tricopper dialuminium, YCu3Al2, is isostructural with hexagonal CaCu5, in which each Cu atom at the 3g(½,0,½) position in space group P6/mmm (No. 191) is partially replaced by an Al atom. The hydrogen-uptake properties are usually enhanced in other AB5 structures by aluminium substitution. YCu5 does not show any hydrogen absorption, and the goal of the present work is to investigate whether aluminium substitution could expand the metal-atom lattice enough to provide better interstitial positions for hydrogen storage. However, no enthalpy change was observed up to 773 K under 3 MPa static H2 pressure by differential thermal analysis (DTA) for the title compound. The compound does not show any significant hydrogen absorption/desorption in the pressure-composition isotherms (P–C–T diagrams) in the temperature range 298–673 K under 3.3 MPa H2 pressure.

    Notes: The title compound, barium palladium oxide, Ba68Pd32Ox, x \simeq 13.5 is a medium-sized cubic suboxide. Two of the four crystallographically independent Ba atoms form a network of face-sharing octahedra with O atoms occupying the central position of these octahedra, giving a network resembling the pyrochlore structure. Two of three O-atom positions are fully occupied and the third partially occupied. The remainder of the Ba atoms and the Pd atoms are distributed in another network residing in the channels of the network of face-sharing O–Ba6 octahedra.

    Notes: The mineral rambergite, hexagonal manganese sulfide, is found to crystallize in the inverse wurtzite structure, i.e. the wurtzite type structure but with the opposite absolute configuration, which can also be named anti-wurtzite. Rambergite was first found in the Garpenberg area, Dalarna, Sweden. The sample used in this investigation contained approximately 5% iron, as determined by microprobe analysis, giving the overall composition Mn1-x Fex S, x \simeq 0.05.
