    Notes: Three species of gobiid fish inhabit the freshwater Lake Trichonis of western Greece. Two of these species, Economidichthys pygmaeus and E. trichonis are endemic, and the third is the widespread Knipowitschia caucasica. There are habitat separations between the three species, E. pygmaeus and E. trichonis prefer vegetated areas, the first being fully demersal at all stages of development and the second being semi-demersal. Knipowitschia caucasica prefers sandy bottoms and is distributed in shallower waters. Female E. pygmaeus and E. trichonis spawn in nests prepared by the males in the cavities of broken reeds. The males subsequently guard the eggs until they hatch, with females playing no role in parental care. Economidichthys trichonis is probably the smallest freshwater European species. Its eggs are ovoid, measuring about 0.64 × 0.58 mm, from which tiny, unpigmented and incompletely developed pelagic larvae hatch out after an incubation period lasting less than 1 day at a water temperature of 19.5° C. The eggs of E. pygmaeus are cylindrical and larger, measuring about 2.38 × 0.89 mm, from which relatively large, strongly pigmented and ontogenetically more advanced larvae hatch out after a longer incubation period. Both species reproduce only once in their lifetime, at the age of 1 year, and die shortly after spawning, but the breeding season involves several spawnings by each individual fish. These biological, developmental and reproductive characteristics are discussed in relation to current theories on evolution of life-historics.

    Notes: The growth and the morphological development of larvae and juveniles of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), from a small stream of western Greece is described, based on field samples and laboratory-raised fish. In the laboratory, size hierarchy was developed and morphological differentiation occurred at a younger age in the fastest growing larvae. Growth was faster in the field and differentiation of fins and scales began at a larger size, but apparently at a younger age, than in the laboratory.

    Notes: The change of egg size in sardine of the Saronikos Gulf (Greece) during the course of the spawning season is examined in relation to the changing conditions of temperature and plankton biomass. It is suggested that the intraspecific variation of egg size is an ecophenotypic rather than a genetic phenomenon, arising from the disturbance of the normal ratio between growth and differentiation rates during the oocyte stage. Assuming that a positive relation between the growth rate of the mother and the growth rate of the eggs during maturation exists, environmental or endogenous factors promoting or retarding the adult growth rate will accelerate or decrease the growth rate of the eggs in relation to the rate of differentiation, resulting in smaller or bigger eggs respectively.

    Notes: Ladigesocypris ghigii (Gianferrari, 1927), commonly called gizani, is an endangered freshwater fish endemic to the Greek island of Rhodes. The spawning behaviour of gizani was studied in aquaria, to develop an artificial breeding technique for this endangered species. Spawning in captivity was recorded over 41 spawning days between 15 February and 14 July 2001, under constant temperature (18 or 21°C) and photoperiod 14L/10D. The number of spawning acts in a day was 82 ± 28. No aggressiveness and no territoriality were developed. The mating system of the fish was polygamous, with females spawning more than once. In captivity, eggs are laid either on aquatic plants or on gravel, while in nature fish spawn mainly on algae and plants. The latter suggests that, as far as breeding substrate is concerned, gizani is an opportunistic species using different substrates when necessary.

    Notes: Abstract The age, growth, feeding habits and reproductive biology of Leuciscus ‘svallize’ in artificial lake Kremasta (Greece), are described. There is a considerable similarity in the feeding and reproductive characteristics between L. ‘svallize’ and L. cephalus and also a similarity in the life span, growth patterns and age of maturation between L. ‘svallize’ and some southern L. cephalus populations, which may suggest similar responses of closely related taxa to similar conditions.
