Description / Table of Contents:
From solutions of anhydrous acetic acid, which contain chlorocuprate(I) and chlorocuprate(II) ions simultaneously, valency-mixed copper(I, II) chlorides like Cu1,19Cl2.19 · 0.5 CH3COOH · 0.14 CH3COCl and Cu1.6Cl2.6 · 1.05 CH3COOH · 0.43 CH3COCl can be precipitated.By adding acetyl bromide in excess below 20° to a copper acetate solution in acetic acid a black precipitate, Cu1.13Br2.13O3 · 1.5 CH3COOH · 0.16 CH3COBr, is formed. Both valency-mixed copper(I, II) chlorides and bromide exist only as acetic acid solvates and are decomposed by heating into heterogenous mixtures of CuCl and CuCl2, or CuBr and CuBr2.Nevertheless, the well-known darkening of anhydrous CuCl2, when heated to 200-300°, seems to result from the formation of non-solvated copper(I, II) chloride as a surface compound, due to an incomplete reduction of CuCl2.
Notes:
