A mechanism for the thermal decomposition of 2,3,4a,9a-tetrahalogeno-l, 2,3,4, 4a, 9a-hexahydro-anthraquinones is presented, which accounts for the production of mainly anthraquinone in the decomposition of the tetrabromo derivative, of mainly 2-chloroanthraquinone in the decomposition of the tetrachloro derivative, and of mixtures of anthraquinone and 2-halogenoanthraquinone from the thermolysis of mixed dibromo-dichloro-hexahydroanthraquinones.
