Description / Table of Contents: Summary The influence of the isocyanate content on the mechanical and thermal behaviour of polyurethane elastomers is studied by differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, and by dynamic mechanical measurements. It is concluded that the separation between hard and soft segment domains becomes very uncomplete with increasing hardness. This effect causes the very broad glass transition of hard PU-elastomers. The melting behaviour of the hard segment regions is discussed, and the influence of the NCO/OH ratio on the properties of the elastomers is investigated.

Notes: Abstract The ultimate mechanical properties of four series of filled SBR samples are analysed and discussed in detail. It is argued that two parameters (activity and concentration of filler particles) have a decisive influence on the homogeneity of the final network structure.

Notes: Summary The complex shear modulus of a linear polyethylene (Marlex 50), of which samples were either crystallized from the melt at various temperatures or precipitated from a dilute xylene solution, has been measured as a function of temperature at fixed frequencies between 105 and 10−1 c/s. The three relaxation regionsα, Β, γ can be distinguished, and activation energies are determined from the relaxation map. Theγ-process shows a frequency-temperature characteristic which has been divided into three partsγ I,γ II,γ III. Further experimental evidence for the “kink model”, proposed in an earlier paper (reference 4) is taken from the investigation of suitable paraffin mixtures. Measurements on six n-alkane systems, each consisting of an even n-paraffin mixed with a few percent of a paraffin with a chain longer by two C-atoms, are reported.

Notes: Influence of specimen thickness on the deformation and fracture behaviour of wide platesThe influence of specimen thickness on the deformation behaviour and the load bearing capacity has been investigated with large scale double-edge-notched-tension-specimens (DENT). The difference of the state of stress can be modelled by simplifications (plain strain, plain stress). Equations for the calculation of plastic limit loads taking into account the defect ratio a/W have been derived based on analytical, numerical and experimental investigations. Already existing equations may lead to unsafe prediction in special situations. The difference between plastic limit and maximum load is smaller for the thicker specimens due to higher toughness requirements. The toughness requirements have been quantified for the DENT-specimens using the J-integral analysis. The requirements mainly depend on the overall dimensions (W, B), the thickness ratio (B/W) and the defect ratio (a/W).
