Notes: The O(N) nonlinear sigma model in a D-dimensional space of the form RD−M×TM, RD−M×SM, or TM×SP is studied, where RM, TM, and SM correspond to flat space, a torus, and a sphere, respectively. Using zeta-regularization and the 1/N expansion, the corresponding partition functions—for deriving the free energy—and the gap equations are obtained. In particular, the free energy at the critical point on R2q+1×S2p+2 vanishes in accordance with the conformal equivalence to the flat space RD. Numerical solutions of the gap equations at the critical coupling constants are given for several values of D. The properties of the partition function and its asymptotic behavior for large D are discussed. In a similar way, a higher-derivative nonlinear sigma model is investigated, too. The physical relevance of our results is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The possibility of topological mass generation through symmetry breaking in a simple model consisting of a self-interacting (massive or massless) λφ4 scalar field on the space–time TN×Rn, n, N∈N0−TN being a general torus—is investigated. The nonrenormalized effective potential is calculated and the specific dependences of the generated mass on the compactification lengths and on the initial mass of the field are determined. Later, in order to obtain the renormalized topologically generated mass, the analysis is restricted to n+N=4 dimensions. It is shown that if the field is massive no symmetry breaking can occur. On the contrary, when it is massless, for n=1 and n=0 and for values of the vector of compactification lengths belonging to some specific domain of RN, symmetry breaking does actually take place. Explicit values of the mass topologically generated in this way are obtained.

Notes: Abstract: The multiplicative anomaly associated with the zeta-function regularized determinant is computed for the Laplace-type operators V 1=−Δ+V 1 and V 2=−Δ+V 2, with V 1, V 2 constant, in a D-dimensional compact smooth manifold M D , making use of several results due to Wodzicki and by direct calculations in some explicit examples. It is found that the multiplicative anomaly is vanishing for D odd and for D=2. An application to the one-loop effective potential of the O(2) self-interacting scalar model is outlined.
