    Notes: Much of our understanding of transport phenomena is based on linear irreversible thermodynamics formalized most notably by Onsager in 1931. As with any theory based on an a priori linear assumption, coefficients appear that may not be calculated from within the theory. In the case of transport these coefficients are usually found empirically. To correctly apply a linear theory the criteria for linearity should be evaluated. In this paper, a general theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, statistical rate theory, is used to outline a method whereby Onsager coefficients may be evaluated for a given circumstance. For a particular osmotic transport example, expressions for the Onsager coefficients are found which are shown to satisfy Onsager's reciprocity hypothesis. Most importantly, criteria for linearity are explicitly formulated. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The statistical rate theory approach is used to describe far-from-equilibrium diffusion of carbon monoxide on a stepped Pt(111) surface at low total coverages. Under nonequilibrium conditions, migration of adsorbates from terraces to steps, where adsorbates are more strongly bound, can occur. An expression for the molecular transport rate between terraces and steps is derived in terms of an equilibrium exchange rate, and the instantaneous chemical potentials of the molecules adsorbed on the terraces and along the steps. The theory contains no free parameters. Both the equilibrium exchange rate and the chemical potentials are obtained in the framework of a lattice gas model. The time evolution of the populations of steps and terraces is calculated and used to fit the available experimental data in order to evaluate the activation barrier of diffusion on terraces and the associated prefactor. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In neural crest-derived sensory ganglia, approximately half of the neuronal population expresses the transmembrane trkA receptor that is required for neuronal binding of target-derived nerve growth factor (NGF). These same neurons also express the p75 neurotrophin receptor (NTR) that increases the affinity of trkA for NGF. Depleting p75NTR expression reduces both the survival of trkA-positive sensory neurons and their afferent innervation of peripheral targets. In this investigation, we assessed the neurochemical and structural plasticity of trigeminal sensory neurons in p75NTR-deficient mice in response to either normal or elevated levels of NGF during postnatal development and into adulthood. Although p75NTR-deficient mice have 30% fewer trigeminal neurons, levels of trkA mRNA expression are modestly elevated in these mutant mice as compared to control mice. The density of central afferent axons and local levels of NGF are, however, comparable between mutant and control animals. Thus, despite the survival of fewer trigeminal neurons, neither ganglionic levels of trkA mRNA expression nor the density of central afferent projections are depleted in p75NTR-deficient mice. In response to elevated levels of NGF protein, transgenic mice with and without p75NTR expression display both increased levels of trkA mRNA expression and a greater density of trigeminal central afferent axons as compared to control mice. These data further reveal that an absence of p75NTR function in trigeminal sensory neurons does not diminish their capacity for NGF-dependent plasticity, namely trkA mRNA expression and collateral growth of central afferent axons.

    Notes: Physical analyses of two newly isolated oversized P1lac phage genomes showed that they are partly diploid in P1 genes and that they carry a 60–70-kb segment of host DNA. The transposable element γδ is present at one of the junctions between host and P1 DNA, and IS1 is at the other junction. These elements must thus have been actively involved in the formation of these P1lac prophages. The genome of a third oversized P1lac has a segment with dispensable P1 genes deleted. The absence of any known recombinogenic element at one of its junctions between P1 and host DNA suggests non-homologous recombination to have been involved in its formation. Non-homologous recombination might have also taken place in one of the final steps of the formation of the former P1lac genomes.

Parvalbumins were isolated from the white muscle ofCynoscion regalis, Leiostomus xanthurus, andMenticirrhus americanus of the Sciaenidae andPomatomus saltatrix of the Pomatomidae. 2. Menticirrhus contains three isoparvalbumins. The other species contain two isoparvalbumins which are designated “fast” and “slow” in accord with their electrophoretic mobilities. Measurements of the denatured molecular weights show the “slow” isoparvalbumins have slightly larger apparent molecular weights, but all apparent molecular weights are in the range 10,400-14,000. 3. Amino acid compositional studies indicate that the fast and slow isoparvalbumins in these fish represent two distinct evolutionary lineages which appear to be evolving at different rates.

    Notes: Summary Escherichia coli pel - mutants inhibit the penetration of bacteriophage lambda DNA into the cell. Using P1 mediated cotransduction, we mapped pel - mutations between markers fadD and eda in the interval of minute 40 of the revised E. coli K-12 map. This places pel in the same region as genes kdgR and ptsM. Mutations in kdgR usually do not alter the Pel phenotype, and vice versa. In contrast, about 30% of ptsM - mutants are also pel -, and all pel - mutants isolated are ptsM -. These results suggest that pel and ptsM are one and the same gene. This interpretation would identify the bacterial product required for injection of phage λ DNA as a component of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system specific for mannose, glucosamine, glucose and fructose. However, the experimental results do not exclude an alternative explanation: that pel and ptsM identify two closely linked genes which would be simulataneously affected at high frequency by a particular mutational event.
