Notes: Abstract Experimental and analytical investigations were made to find the rebound characteristics and temperature rise in elastomer slabs subjected to repetitive impact. For its mechanical response, the elastomer was modeled as a linearly viscoelastic material, and its frequency and temperature dependent moduli were determined by Rheo-vibron tests. The experimental traces of impact force vs. time were studied in relation to various input parameters (e.g., impact velocity and slab thickness). An iterative method was devised to calculate the pulse from the input parameters enabling the analyst to estimate the peak force or duration of impacts occurring in a specific damper. As opposed to single (isolated) impacts, the repetitive impact process is conducive to temperature rise in the elastomer slabs resulting in a steady state temperature distribution. Under various input parameters, the temperature on the surface and inside the rubber was measured in the steady state. Both a simplified and a pulsed-heat-generative mathematical model was used to analytically estimate these temperatures.

Notes: The usual procedure for shifting dynamic mechanical data, involving the construction of a master plot, was compared with a simpler, computer-implemented double shift procedure, which obviates the need for such a construction. Data reproducibility indicates that the double shift may successfully be shifted to frequencies greater than one decade to either side of the experimental range.

Notes: Scattered data exist in the literature on the chemical reactions which occur during mechanical contact. It is our contention that these reactions occur as a direct result of the high temperatures generated at the contact interface, due to the dissipation of mechanical energy. A theoretical analysis is used to identify and rank the various sources of heat generation during repetitive impact or sliding. New data, on both filled and unfilled polymers and elastomers, supported by data from the literature, are used to show that the resultant temperature rise causes reactions at the interface; the extents of these reactions depend on the polymer structure and the magnitude of the temperature rise. Several ways of reducing the magnitude of this temperature rise are discussed.

Notes: A method of viscoelastic contact stress analysis introduced in an earlier paper10 is developed further to treat two problems: the steady-state rolling of a cylinder and axisymmetric impact of a sphere. The procedure is equally applicable to a medium of infinite depth (half-space) or to a slab of finite thickness. The analysis is based on the computation of a set of viscoeiastic influence coefficients. To find the pressure distribution on the instantaneous contact surface, point matching is used. In the rolling problem, a study is made of such phenomena as critical speed and the effect of medium thickness through a comparison with existing results. The impact problem is solved in an iterative scheme of successive approximations. An example is presented for the study of typical impact parameters.
