Notizen: An ultrahigh vacuum compatible cooled ionizer suitable for use with a quadruple mass spectrometer has been constructed. It allows one to monitor rapidly changing signals of condensable gases as are commonly encountered in modulated molecular beam studies of surface reaction kinetics with minimal distortions due to adsorption/desorption phenomena within the ionizer. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The etching of Si(100) with hyperthermal beams of atomic and molecular chlorine has been studied in the temperature range between 130 and 200 K. The dominant etch product, SiCl4, is evolved in two parallel reaction pathways, only one of which is thermally activated. It is shown that the nonactivated pathway, which has an appreciable rate only when hyperthermal chlorine atoms are incident upon the surface, is due to collision-induced desorption of weakly bound SiCl4. By increasing the normal component of the chlorine incident translational energy, the efficiency of converting incident Cl into SiCl4 can be increased to 0.6% in the nonthermal channel, at temperatures for which the thermal etching rate is negligible. The normal energy scaling and the observed energy threshold suggest that this process should result in highly anisotropic etching.

Notizen: The effect of coincident ion bombardment on the oxidation of Si (100) by atomic oxygen has been examined under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by employing molecular beam techniques and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ion bombardment leads to a significant enhancement in the rate of oxidation. By modulating both the oxygen and ion (Ar+ ) fluxes several possible mechanisms for the enhanced rate can be eliminated. Of the remaining possibilities, a mechanism involving competition between ion-induced oxygen incorporation and sputtering appears most likely.

Notizen: A commercially available straight-through valve has been modified for use in ultrahigh vacuum. Since it is actuated by a solenoid coil, opening and closing can easily be triggered from outside the vacuum system. The time elapsed between the interruption of the solenoid current and the closing of the valve is 3×10−2 s.

Notizen: Modification of a commerical motor to drive a chopper blade in UHV is described. The motor has performed satisfactorally at a frequency of 200 Hz over prolonged periods. The observed pressure rise which is due primarily to outgassing of the bearings is less than 1×10−9 Torr.

Notizen: A three-axis manipulator suitable for atom diffraction experiments has been constructed by combining three modules with translation, polar rotation, and azimuthal-tilt rotation capabilities. No magnetic materials are used and materials have been chosen to minimize the possibility of galling in vacuum. Azimuthal rotations of up to ±110°, tilt rotations of up to ±30°, and polar rotations of ±180° are possible with the manipulator. The Z motion is ±2 in. and XY motions of 10 mm lead to a change in azimuthal and tilt angles of less than one degree. The sample is heated with electron bombardment and can be cooled to 80 K.

Notizen: Hard wall and soft wall potentials have been used to analyze helium diffraction data from Ni(115). From this analysis, we have determined the equipotential surface which is simply related to the electron charge distribution at the surface. Corrugation functions for the hard wall as well as the repulsive and classical turning point corrugation functions for a corrugated Morse potential have been compared with electron density contours calculated from atomic superposition. The corrugation functions determined from soft and hard wall potentials have the same shape and differ only slightly in their maximum amplitudes. This shows that the hard wall model is suitable for structural studies even on strongly corrugated surfaces. The shape of the surface corrugation is not in agreement with electron density contours calculated for bulk termination. Large surface relaxations can bring the shapes of the corrugation function and the electron density contour into good agreement. However, we conclude that these relaxations are physically unreasonable and that electron delocalization rather than shifts in atom position primarily determine the shape of the electron density contour at the surface.

Notizen: A method is presented to map a corrugated Morse potential, whose well depth and softness parameter are given, into a hard wall potential. This demonstrates that there is a one-to-one correspondence between hard wall and corrugated Morse potentials. The inverse mapping from a best fit hard wall corrugation function to a Morse potential is sufficiently accurate that the best fit Morse potential can be determined in a gradient search with minimal computational effort.

Notizen: We present evidence that the equilibrium topography of the Ni(115) surface in the temperature range 100 K〈T〈1000 K is that expected above its roughening temperature. This conclusion is based on a detailed line shape analysis of the specular diffraction peak at anti-Bragg angles as a function of temperature. The experimental results are combined with a generic phase diagram for stepped (11m) surfaces of face centered cubic (fcc) metals and is estimated that the roughening temperature of Ni(115) is below 50 K, that of Ni(113) approximately 200±50 K, and that of Ni(001) well above 420 K.
