Notes: In this letter the photoemissive properties of K–Te films produced under ultrahigh vacuum conditions are reported. K–Te photocathodes were fabricated by vapor deposition of Te and K onto a Mo substrate into the preparation chamber of the Free Electron Laser of the University of Twente. The highest quantum efficiency obtained at 259 nm was 11.1%, measured just after evaporation; this value decreased in a few minutes to a stable quantum efficiency of 8.3%. The reported results show that K–Te can be considered a promising material for the use as a photocathode in photoinjectors. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An electrical to optical efficiency of 5% has been demonstrated in an x-ray preionized XeCl discharge laser using an improved prepulse-mainpulse circuit, based on resonant charging of the peaking capacitor. In contrast to known prepulse-mainpulse circuits, the new scheme has no time delay between prepulse and mainpulse nor a voltage reversal on the electrodes. We present three possible configurations of the scheme and one of them has been realized for demonstrating its high-efficiency capabilities.

Notes: Abstract Subnanosecond infrared pulses have been measured by noncollinear secondharmonic generation in tellurium. The method is very practical because due to the high refractive index the fine tuning of the phase matching is easily obtained by rotating the crystal around the optic axis.

Notes: Abstract A cryogenically cooled sealed-off x-ray preionized self-sustained discharge CO laser was succesfully operated. It was found that 20 to 40% higher output energies could be obtained using x-ray instead of uv preionization. A maximum output energy of 2.9 J per pulse could be extracted from a 2×2×40cm3 discharge volume. The maximum electrical efficiency proved to be 12.6%.

Notes: Abstract The output characteristics are described of an X-ray preionized discharge pumped XeCl laser, fed by a low-impedance pulse forming line (PFL), at pressures up to 12 bar. The influence of a multichannel rail gap placed between the PFL and the laser head on the output energy was studied. We found an increase of output energy with increasing pressure up to 8 bar. At higher pressures a saturation behaviour was found. The maximum output energy per unit volume was 6.5 J/l.

Notes: Abstract It has been observed for a plane-parallel resonator with a saturated medium that under certain conditions confined beams mainly concentrated near the axis are present. The experiments have been done with a sealed-off plane-parallel CO2 laser of one meter length and with an internal diameter of 20 mm. Without gain variations such a system is unstable because of thermal defocussing by the heated gas. But due to sufficiently high gain variations the beam converges nevertheless. Since the gain variation increases with decreasing reflectivity confined beams near the optical axis are only observed at sufficiently low reflectivity. The experiments were done with a totally reflecting mirror and an outcoupling mirror having a reflectivity of, respectively, 90%, 80%, 50%, and 36%. For the high reflectivities the outcoupled beam is mainly concentrated near the edge with irregular density distributions. For the low reflectivity the beam is more or less radially symmetric, concentrated near the axis having decreasing intensity with the distance from the axis. The behaviour can be understood by an analysis in which the constant and quadratic term of the complex propagation constant near the optical axis due to gain variations, dispersion and heat effects are taken into account.
