    Notes: Reaction progress exhibited by multivariant assemblages in micaceous limestones can provide an excellent record of metamorphic fluid flow. However, it is necessary to understand the sensitivity of these assemblages to bulk-composition parameters. Here, analysis of bulk composition on different scales and pseudosection construction are used to draw conclusions on relationships between bulk composition, fluid flow and reaction progress. Issues addressed include the effects of bulk composition on the mineralogical evolution of micaceous carbonates, the sensitivity of bulk composition to bulk-composition sampling methods, the magnitude of cross-layer fluid-composition gradients, the potential for metasomatism to drive reaction progress, and the relative timing of reaction in adjacent layers. Pseudosections successfully represent observed mineral assemblages, constrain the position of reactions in T–X(CO2) space, and allow assessment of the sensitivity of reaction position, inferred reaction progress and calculated fluid fluxes to uncertainties in bulk composition. The scale of bulk-composition sampling affects bulk compositions, calculated modes, predicted mineral assemblages and calculated fluid compositions. Larger samples record an average of different lithological subdomains, while point-count-derived bulk compositions are subject to uncertainties related to the small number of sample points. The optimum bulk composition for pseudosection purposes probably lies between measured bulk compositions. Results suggest that reaction progress in some extensively reacted layers was driven by infiltration of H2O-rich fluid which flowed or diffused parallel to layering, perpendicular to layering in response to fluid-composition gradients, and out of veins. Small variations in fluid composition across layering (ΔX(CO2) 〈 0.02) were maintained by internal buffering by the mineral assemblages. Internal buffering must also have driven samples up a sequence of narrow low-variance fields in T–X(CO2) space, and so reaction in adjacent layers must have close to simultaneous. Metasomatic effects on reaction progress are likely to have been small, so long as the porosity was low.

    Notes: O, Sr and C isotopes from east-central Vermont are used to provide information on the timing and volume of metamorphic fluid flow. The results are then used to assess the evidence for redox transformations between C species. Oxygen profiles are homogenised on a metre scale; comparison with Sr isotopes suggest that O alteration may have occurred over a significantly larger timescale than that of Sr, possibly because O was modified during dewatering and diagenesis in addition to the high temperature alteration recorded by strontium. Sr isotope distributions are consistent with cross-layer fluid fluxes of 104−106 moles m−2; absolute values depend on the Sr fluid-rock distribution coefficient which is poorly known; however, reaction progress constraints suggest that fluxes were towards the lower end of this range. High δ13C values observed at lithological boundaries cannot be explained by volume loss or closed system processes and are taken to indicate reductive precipitation of graphite as a result of mixing between CO2 and CH4-bearing fluids. Mass balance calculations indicate that redox reactions occurring under metamorphic conditions convert a minimum of 10% of the CO2 released from limestones into graphite, thus providing a potentially important control on the average residence time of C within the crust with implications for C cycling models.

    Notes: Abstract An expression is derived for the calculation of time-integrated metamorphic fluid fluxes in two or more dimensions in rocks undergoing multivariant reactions under conditions of varying pressure, temperature and angle of flow. This calcuation requires knowledge of mineral assemblages, modes and compositions, which are obtained from isobaric T-X CO2 pseudosections constructed using the program THERMOCALC and compared with those observed in east central Vermont. THERMOCALC is capable of reproducing peak mineral assemblages, modes, compositions and the observed reaction sequences within the system KCaNaFMASCH for two kyanite grade pelitic carbonate rocks from a Barrovian style regional metamorphic terrain in east central Vermont, U.S.A. Calculation of fluid fluxes for decarbonation reactions under conditions of horizontal, layer-parallel flow produces time-integrated fluid flux figures of the order of 108 moles m−2. Allowance for possible cross-layer flow from adjacent dehydrating pelites reduces this figure significantly, with episodic cross-layer fluxes of the order of 105 moles m−2 being capable of driving the observed decarbonation. Chlorite bearing carbonate protoliths would have initially dehydrated with increasing temperature, a process requiring down-temperature fluid flow to produce the assemblages currently observed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des feuilles de Gingko séchées et broyées ont été soumises à différentes extractions. On a testé l'activité déterrante (antiapprétant) des extraits successifs sur les larves de Pieris brassicae. Un grand nombre de fractions inhibent modérément la consommation, et certaines sont déterrantes à des concentrations aussi faibles que 25–50 ppm. Par électrophysiologie, on a testé la réponse nerveuse des sensilles gustatives maxillaires à certaines fractions qui montraient une forte action sur le comportement. Il s'avère que ces extraits stimulent les récepteurs déterrants. Les réponses diffèrent pour P. brassicae et P. rapae. Les gingkolides A, B et C stimulent chacun fortement les récepteurs déterrants chez P. rapae, ce qui correspond aux observations (Matsumoto & Sei, 1987) selon lesquelles ces composés sont des antiappétants efficaces pour cette espèce. On n'a pas observé d'effet toxique sur les insectes nourris durant 24 heures par des diètes contenant des extraits de Gingko.
    Notes: Abstract Powdered dried ginkgo tree leaves were subjected to various chemical extractions and successive extracts were monitored for antifeedant activity against larvae of Pieris brassicae. Many fractions moderately inhibited food intake, and some were deterrent at levels as low as 25–50 ppm. Some behaviourally highly active fractions were tested electrophysiologically for neural responses in the maxillary taste sensilla. These extracts appeared to stimulate deterrent receptors. There were distinct differences in responses between Pieris brassicae and P. rapae. Ginkgolide A, B, and C each strongly stimulated deterrent receptors in P. rapae, which corresponds with the observation (Matsumoto & Sei, 1987) that these compounds are effective antifeedants for this species. No toxic effects were observed in insects after feeding for 24 h on diets containing ginkgo extracts.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of extracted and artificial oilseed rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera) odors on the behavioral response of male and female cabbage seed weevils (Ceutorynchus assimilis) was investigated in a wind tunnel. Odor-mediated upwind anemotaxis was induced by leaf extract and its artificial equivalent. Omission of two isothiocyanates from the artificial extract significantly reduced the upwind movement of females. Increasing the wind speed within the tunnel significantly reduced upwind movement in response to the odor of leaf and flower extracts. The artificial baits proved less attractive than simple extracts from oilseed rape. Field trapping confirmed that extracted leaf material was more attractive than artificial equivalents.

    Notes: Abstract The responses ofCeutorhynchus assimilis Payk. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) to the odor of overwintered and new generation weevils were studied using an olfactometer, choice tests in a laboratory cage, field tests using sticky traps baited with live weevils, and by electroantennograms (EAG's). Unmated male weevils and, to a lesser extent, female weevils of the overwintered generation were attracted to the odor of live unmated over-wintered female weevils. New generation weevils exhibited no behavioral response to conspecific odor. Male and female weevils of the overwintered generation exhibited positive EAGs to hexane extracts of overwintered female weevils, whereas EAGs of new-generation weevils of either sex were unresponsive to these extracts. This suggests that the unmated female weevils from the overwintered generation produce a volatile chemical or chemicals that attracts unmated male and female weevils. The new generation of female weevils does not produce this attractive chemical before overwintering, and male and female weevils of this generation can not detect the chemical(s) via their antennal chemoreceptors until they have undergone their overwintering period.

    Notes: Abstract Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from male and female cabbage seed weevils (Ceutorhynchus assimilis Payk.) in response to volatiles isolated and identified from the odor of oilseed rape (Brassica napus ssp.oleifera DC. cv. Ariana). Relatively large EAGs were obtained on stimulation with volatiles produced by the oilseed rape crop at the time when seed weevils were actively searching for host plants. Artificial rape odor without certain key volatile compounds was in most cases significantly less stimulatory than odor containing these volatiles. There were significant differences in the EAG response of the sexes ofC. assimilis to the green leaf volatiles of oilseed rape and several terpenes present in rape flower odor. The importance of the qualitative and quantitative composition of host-plant odor in host location byC. assimilis is discussed.
