    Comparative study of some haematological and biochemical blood parameters in fishes from the Skagerrak (1976)

    Notes: Marine fishes caught in the Skagerrak, 27 different species representing various groups of fishes (Cyclostomi, Holocephali, Elasmobranchii and Teleostei), were examined for the following haematological and biochemical blood parameters: haematocrit, haemoglobin, mean corpuscle haemoglobin concentration, total plasma protein, blood glucose and blood lactate. Interspecies variations as well as variations within some species were observed. The haemoglobin values for all species showed a positive correlation to the corresponding haematocrit values. Relatively low values for haematocrit and haemoglobin were found in cyclostomes, holocephaleans and elasmobranchii compared to the majority of teleosts. Within the teleost group, the haematocrit and haemoglobin levels were positively correlated with the activity of the fish species. The cyclostome Myxine glutimsa L. had a total plasma protein content in the same range as most teleosts, whereas holocephaleans, elasmobranchii and the deep-water teleost Coryphaenoides rupestris Gunnerus showed comparatively low values. Among teleosts some relationship seemed to exist between the total plasma protein level and the activity of the fish species. In addition, a correlation between plasma protein content and levels of blood lipids were noted. Values for blood glucose and blood lactate were found to be lower in cyclostomes, holocephaleans and elasmobranchii than in most teleosts. Higher blood glucose levels were observed in the more active teleost species.

    Notes: The size and microscopic structure of the spleen of the migratory pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) show marked changes during the reproductive cycle. Upon the spring return to their northern breeding sites, the birds have a small spleen with little lymphoid activity and a poorly developed red pulp. During the breeding period the volume of red and white pulp increases, the number and distinctness of lymphoid follicles (germinal centres) in the white pulp increase, and groups of cells with intensely basophilic cytoplasm, probably B cells (plasma cells), appear. The findings suggest that the immune system of the adult pied flycatcher is activated during periods when it is bound to the nest.Young flycatchers beginning their autumn migration also show a marked increase of lymphoid activity in the spleen.

    Notes: The marine priapulid Priapulus caudatus has a voluminous body cavity filled with a blood-like fluid containing erythrocytes and leucocytes (amoebocytes). The hematocrit of animals weighing 0.5-14 gm was 2-10%. The erythrocytes contain a hemerythrin blood pigment. The structure of the coelomocytes was studied by light and electron microscopy. The erythrocytes are nucleated and contain marginal bands, vacuoles and occasionally crystals. The cytoplasm has few organelles. The leucocytes are amoeboid motile cells, the cytoplasm of which contains numerous organelles. The most conspicuous of these are oval particles, probably representing developmental stages of lysosomes. Most of these organelles contain tubules stretching from one pole to another. In the hind part of the animal, certain tissues, primarily the posterior warts contain large numbers of coelomocytes. The histological picture is complicated, showing some resemblance to the lymphoepithelial tissues of vertebrates.

The activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) has been determined in different parts of the swimbladder of two physostome species, the rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, and the eel,Anguilla anguilla, and three physoclist species, the Atlantic cod,Gadus morhua, the perch,Perca fluviatilis and the goldsinny wrasse,Ctenolabrus rupestris. 2. High activities of ChAT were found in the gas gland of the physoclist species. Preganglionic denervation (in the cod) only partly reduces this activity. It is concluded that the gas gland has a postganglionic cholinergic innervation. 3. The secretory mucosa outside the gas gland shows intermediate ChAT activity in the wrasse and low activity in the cod and the perch. 4. Very low activities of ChAT were found in the oval edge of the cod and the perch, indicating little if any cholinergic innervation of this area. The resorbent area of the wrasse swimbladder shows an intermediate activity. 5. In the eel the secretory mucosa shows low ChAT activity, indicating sparse innervation of the secretory cells. The resorbent mucosa contains a much higher activity. 6. The rainbow trout has an evenly distributed intermediate ChAT activity in the swimbladder.
