N-Methylation of 2-phenylbenzimidazole, 2-phenylindole and three 3,2′-methylene-bridged 2-phenylindoles gives rise to significant changes in the chemical shifts of the protons close to the phenyl---heterocycle bond. The observed upfield and downfield shifts are accounted for by deviation from a planar conformation in the non-rigid molecules and by intramolecular compression effects in the more rigid molecules, respectively.
