Notes: Notch width sensitivity, a serious deficiency of polycarbonate, can be improved by addition of 3-10 percent of specially modified methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) graft polymers. Blends of these modifiers with polycarbonate are transparent, in contrast to polycarbonate blends with previously reported notch width sensitivity improvers which are opaque. The synthesis of these modifiers is described together with physical properties of polycarbonate/modifier blends.

Notes: A new method is described to introduce pure blocks of ethylene, isoprene, and styrene into polymer systems composed of these moieties. This method involves the selective catalytic hydrogenation of 1,4-butadieine-1,4-isoprene and 1,4-butadieine-1,4-isoprene-styrene co and terpolymers to form ethylene-1,4-isoprene and ethylene-1,4-isoprene-styrene co and trepolymers. The properties of these polymer systems are discussed as a function of composition and degree of polymerization. A useful feature of this technique is the preparation of ABA type thermoplastic elastomers.

Notes: Graft polyblends of styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate with EPDM rubbers are PVC impact modifiers. Specific compositions in PVC composites have unaged impact strengths similar to PVC composites with commercial ABS, polyacrylate, and chlorinated polyethylene modifiers at equivalent concentrations. Modifier efficiency and weatherability of the EPDM based modifiers are compared to ABS, polyacrylate, and chlorinated polyethylene.

Description / Table of Contents: Eine neue Methode zur Hydrierung ungesättigter Bindungen in Polymeren wird beschrieben.
Notes: A new method is described to hydrogenate polymeric unsaturation. The hydrogenation of polybutadiene, polyisoprene and polystyrene is effected with coordination catalysts derived from alkyl or aryl lithiums and transition metal salts of 2-ethylhexanoic acid. The catalyst activity is discussed as a function of lithium-transition metal ratio, catalyst concentration, temperature, and hydrogen pressure.

Notes: The selective hydrogenation of poly-1,4-butadiene in the presence of poly-1,4-isoprene is described. Both of these polydienes are hydrogenated more easily than polystyrene. The catalysts which effect these selective hydrogenations are made by the reaction of organoaluminum or lithium compounds with transition metal salts of 2-ethylhexanoic acid.
