Notes: Abstract Methods for measuring dynamic shear properties of viscoelastic solids are discussed and a new method for direct measurement at high frequencies (1500 Hz) is outlined. The variation of complex shear modulus, dynamic in-phase shear modulus and the loss, out-of-phase shear modulus for polysulphide and ethylene propylene rubbers is shown as a function of temperature (−40 to 100° C) and frequency (50 to 1500 Hz). The Mooney theory of deformation of cross-linked polymer networks is used to define the molecular structure of the elastomers more fully. Recommendations are made for producing high-damping elastomers in the audiofrequency range.

Notes: Abstract A new method is described for data-logging large amounts of grain boundary misorientation information from channelling patterns in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The method relies on producing specimens where the grain size is larger than the specimen thickness and where the grain boundary planes are perpendicular to the specimen plane (the so-called columnar structure). Results for grain growth in pure aluminium at 460 and 500°C are presented. There is an increase in the proportion of low angle boundaries at the expense of high angle boundaries during growth times of up to a few hours. The reasons are thought to be partly connected with lower low angle boundary mobility compared with high angle boundaries. However, the growth kinetics appear to be normal over the entire growth time range.

Notes: Abstract Chemical diffusion coefficients for chromium in austenitic and ferritic steels are determined using diffusion couples studied by electron probe microanalysis techniques. The average chemical volume diffusion coefficient, for the composition range 14 to 28 at % chromium, for ferritic AISI 446 in the temperature range 800 to 1000° C is: $$\tilde D = 0.15\left( {\frac{{ + 0.54}}{{ - 0.12}}} \right) \exp \left( {\frac{{ - 210( \pm 15)}}{{RT}}} \right) cm^2 \sec ^{ - 1} $$ and for austenitic AlSl 310 in the temperature range 800 to 1200°C is: $$\tilde D = 0.27\left( {\frac{{ + 1.04}}{{ - 0.22}}} \right) \exp \left( {\frac{{ - 246( \pm 16)}}{{RT}}} \right) cm^2 \sec ^{ - 1} $$ whereR is in kJ K−1 mol−1 Good agreement is found with existing data for ferritic steels but the data are more scattered in the austenitic case. Diffusion data from diffusion couples are thought to be more realistic than those obtained from tracer work for the purpose of predicting diffusion-controlled corrosion behaviour.

Notes: Abstract An important distinction is made between the discontinuous precipitation Of M23C6 carbide (where M = metal) in a nickel-base superalloy compared with those in other systems. The reaction is considered pseudo-discontinuous since carbon must diffuse to the precipitate from the general matrix. The additional factor imposed by the partial carbon diffusion controlled growth is utilized to uniquely define the kinetics of the discontinuous precipitation. This paper details the theory involved end then compares the computed results with extensive measurements made in a transmission electron microscope of precipitates in Nimonic 80A. The results show the feasibility of the participation of carbon-diffusion control in growth. They also confirm the high dependence of discontinuous precipitation on grain boundary nucleation and on the direction of growth in the receding grain. The theoretical analysis is used to indicate how discontinuous precipitation may be avoided by heat treatment and compositional control.

Notes: Abstract The combined effects of cerium and boron additions on the room-temperature tensile properties and high-temperature oxidation behaviour of Ni3Al alloys: alloy 1 doped with cerium, alloy 2 doped with boron, and alloy 3 doped with both cerium and boron. The strength, ductility and oxidation behaviour of the alloy are more effectively improved by combined cerium and boron additions than by cerium or by boron addition alone. Of the three alloys, alloy 3 exhibits comprehensively the best mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. Alloy 2 presents the better mechanical properties than alloy 1; nevertheless, alloy 1 has the better oxidation resistance than alloy 2.

Notes: Abstract Improvements have been made to an earlier model of grain boundary segregation. The new model includes an influx of vacancies into the region of the material considered by the model, and accounts for the effect of a grain boundary on defect-binding energies. The model predictions for boron segregation in steel are compared with the original model.

Notes: Abstract A vertical tube furnace and a four-channel digital storage oscilloscope have been used to determine quench rates for standard tensile specimens of a martensitic stainless steel. The quenching media examined were air, oil and water. Theoretical calculations were made, based on convection heat-transfer approaches, which quantify the heat flow from the specimen surfaces during cooling. Experimental data are in reasonable agreement with predicted values.
