Notes: In this paper it is shown that nonlinear propagation in a step-index, "monomode'' optical fiber is not generally governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, even when the fiber is axially symmetric. It is governed by a coupled pair of nonlinear partial differential equations that includes the nonlinear Schrödinger equations only as a special case. Three simple types of solution to the coupled system are analyzed and the corresponding field patterns are interpreted. One case shows that, for uniform wavetrains, nonlinearity not only alters the phase speed but also causes the field pattern in an "elliptically polarized'' mode to rotate gradually about the fiber axis. The other two cases each allow the system to be reduced to a single nonlinear Schrödinger equation, so showing two distinct situations in which solutions have soliton properties.

Notes: This paper is a report on the introduction of microfiches to replace conventional pre-prepared handouts for solutions to exercises in the first-year engineering mathematics course at Nottingham University. Details of the arrangement of material on the microfiches are described, as is the system of labelling the frames of the microfiches and the equations. Some general comments on the preparation of material are also made. The microfiches are very popular with the students and their cost compares very favourably with that of the production of large numbers of photocopies of conventional handouts. The system may be easily adapted for use in many other subjects.

Notes: We present results from the application of two conformational searching methods: genetic algorithms (GA) and direct search methods for finding low energy conformations of organic molecules. GAs are in a class of biologically motivated optimization methods that evolve a population of individuals in which individuals who are more “fit” have a higher probability of surviving into subsequent generations. The parallel direct search method (PDS) is a type of pattern search method that uses an adaptive grid to search for minima. Both methods found energies equal to or lower than the energy of the relaxed crystal structure in all cases, at a relatively small cost in CPU time. We suggest that either method would be a good candidate to find 3-D conformations in a large scale screening application. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
