    Notes: Abstract A method for the determination of mercury in solid samples using laser ablation coupled with atomic fluorescence spectroscopy has been developed. An Nd-YAG laser was used for ablation and the vaporised and atomised material was rapidly led to an atomic fluorescence detector, where excitation and emission took place. The experimental approach was applied to the assessment of different procedures as sensitive as possible for implementing standard addition methods. Calibration curves were recorded using the prepared standards, which exhibited linear ranges between 0.5–100 μg/g, with excellent regression coefficients in all instances (0.9907). The precision, expressed as RSD %, was 3 and 4% for contents of 1 and 30 μg/g, respectively, in the same pellet; and 7 and 12% for the same contents and different type of pellets. The method has been applied to the determination of mercury in CRM of sewage sediment and a sludge sample with a known amount of mercury determined by an interlaboratory study. The results obtained show good agreement with those expected.

    Notes: Summary An automatic method based on the combination of a flow injection (FI) manifold with a liquid chromatograph has been developed for the enrichment and determination of transition metal ions in water samples. Alternatively, the FI configuration can be used as a screening system for the determination of the total concentration of heavy metals. Two-parameter expressions for calibration graphs involving preconcentration time and concentration of the analytes were established for both the FIA and the integrated FIA/HPLC methods. The preconcentration time depends on the concentration level of the analytes in the samples. The method is linear in the range 2–200 ng/ml, with r.s.d. values between 1.5 and 5.0. It has been applied to the determination of copper, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, cadmium and manganese in synthetic water samples.

    Notes: Summary A new procedure for continuous cleanup and concentration of hydroxyvitamin D3 metabolites prior to their separation by HPLC and UV-detection is reported. The process is based on the use of aminopropyl-silica as solid-phase sorbent as an alternative to the use of nonpolar sorbents. The improvement thus achieved has been tested by comparing the results with those obtained using octadecyl-C18 as non-polar sorbent. The comparison has been based on the calibration graphs (linear range, detection and quantitation limits), precision and multiple standard addition method.

    Notes: The 581 nm output from a dye laser in a fluence range between 2.86 and 11.47 J cm-2 was used to ablate pure Zn and Fe foils. The average ablation rate (AAR, μm per shot) was calculated for different experimental variables (buffer gas, pressure, laser fluence and focal conditions). Deposition of previously ablated material in the ablation crater results in large variation of the observed AAR values. This effect was observed in air and argon buffer gases at atmospheric pressure. The situation is largely alleviated at reduced pressure due to free expansion of the ablated material. Under these circumstances the capability of laser-induced plasmas to resolve interfacial structures is improved. The effect on depth-resolved studies was checked with a commercial Zn-coated steel sample. Due to the Gaussian-like energy distribution of the incident laser beam, the material is ablated to produce a conical crater. This fact ensures that the Zn signal remains for a longer time because the ablated region spreads over the edge gradually. At low pressure the emission peaks are better defined and the background becomes flat. However, these conditions produce also the lowest net intensities and some peaks are not detected. An Ar atmosphere produces more intense spectral lines at both pressure levels. Best analytical results were obtained at reduced pressure, with a slight improvement in depth resolution in the presence of Ar. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
