    Notes: Abstract The aim of the present work is the performance evaluation of a fluidized bed reactor in the anaerobic treatment of a wastewater deriving from the washing operations of the wine industry. The results are in agreement with the ones obtained using a mixture of municipal and food processing wastewaters containing high organic contents. A comparison with other liquid wastes shows that no subtrate inhibition phenomenon occurs with the above substrates. A saturation kinetic model is also presented for describing the dependence of the COD removal rate on the organic loading rate.

    Notes: Abstract In order to reduce the inhibiting effect of product on ethanol fermentation and to exploit at best the sugar substrate, a system continuously recycling the unfermented sugars and recovering produced ethanol is proposed in this paper. Unacceptable increases of unfermentable polysaccharides and ions in the broth up to inhibiting levels have been evidenced after about 40 d of continuous recycling. The accumulation of these substances has been overcome by installing in the production cycle two subsequent separated stages for polysaccharide enzymatic hydrolysis and ion bioaccumulation, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Aim of the present paper is to give a contribution for a better understanding of the mechanism of magnesium accumulation by cells of Sphaerotilus natans. The results presented in this paper seem to confirm the non strictly biological nature of the phenomenon. An inhibiting effect of ethanol on the uptake is also evidenced and a hypothesis for the inhibition mechanism, implying the simultaneous occurrence of both physical and biological phenomena, is presented. In the presence of ethanol a film around the cell membrane is likely to be produced, partially preventing the adhesion of magnesium ions on the wall; subsequently, ethanol would be transformed into acetic acid and magnesium removed from the cell wall as a salt. All the efforts to improve the process yields and the resistance of the microorganism to ethanol, through specific adaptions, have not given the expected results.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of mixing on batch alcohol fermentation of diluted solutions of starch hydrolysate is studied. The results of a limited number of samples simultaneously drawn at different locations in the reactor and after different reaction times have been used in a simple mathematical model to provide a picture of the concentration distributions within the reaction environment. The optimal mixing conditions for the fermentation are met at rotation speeds between 1.7 and 5.0 s−1, while the broth homogeneity obviously increases indefinitely with increasing this parameter. This suggests the existence of a shear stress for the biomass, whose effect increases with the application time and seems to affect the process mainly at the end of the fermentation.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with the study of the kinetics and thermodynamics of batch enzymic hydrolysis of multisubstrate media in the presence of more than one glucanase. A kinetic model, similar to the one proposed for competitive inhibition, is presented to describe the competition between two substrates, tri- and tetrasaccharides, for the same enzyme, glucoamylase. A literature research on the most recurrent values of the Michaelis-Menten constant also shows a linear relationship between this parameter and the molecular weight of the sugar substrate for a given glucanase.

    Notes: The increasing interest in alcohol fermentation over these last years because of the energy crisis has been demonstrated by an increase in scientific research. After a brief analysis of the main results of the literature in the field of alcohol fermentation reactors, the use of a new type of immobilized cell reactor [the rotating biological surface (RBS) reactor] was studied. As is well known, the RBS reactor is a form of fixed-film reactor and can be described as a dynamic trickling filter. Our experimental apparatus employed a spongy material to trap the yeast cells on the disks. The results of fermentations carried out in the RBS reactor working in batch, in continuous with cell support, and in continuous without cell support have been presented in order to compare the different productivities and to assess the performance of the RBS immobilized cell reactor. An ethanol productivity of 7.1 g/L h was achieved in the RBS-ICR at a dilution rate of 0.3 h-1, 2.5 times higher than the maximum productivity obtained in the RBS reactor without support at a lower dilution rate. The adoption of a spongy material as a cell immobilizer, combined with the use of the RBS reactor, enhances the particular advantages of both systems.

    Notes: The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of biologically removing phenol from waste gases by means of a biofilter using a Pseudomonas putida strain. Two series of both batch and continuous tests have been performed in order to ascertain the microbial degradation of phenol. For the preliminary batch tests, carried out in order to test the effective feasibility of the process and to investigate their kinetic behavior, two different microbial cultures belonging to the Pseudomonas genus have been employed, a heterogeneous culture and a pure strain of P. putida. The results of these comparative investigation showed that the pure culture is more efficient than the mixed one, even when the latter has undergone three successive acclimatization tests. The continuous experiments have been conducted during a period of about 1 year in a laboratory-scale column, packed with a mixture of peat and glass beads, and utilizing the pure culture of P. putida as microflora and varying the inlet phenol concentration from 50 up to 2000 mg m-3. The results obtained show that high degrees of conversion can be obtained (0.93/0.996) operating at a residence time of 54 s. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract A mathematical model is presented which provides analytical solutions for the uptake regulation and pulmonary elimination of inert vapours and gases. The results obtained are in extremely good agreement with both experimental data and the exact numerical solutions usually suggested in the literature. In particular, some analytical solutions to correlate the behaviour of the gas concentration in the tissues with the various physiological parameters during the uptake regulation and desorption have been obtained.
