Notes: Torsion tests were conducted on thin-walled tubes made of a commercial soft PZT. These tests in combination with literature results from tensile and compression tests allowed determination of the nonsymmetric yield condition for the plastic deformations. Good agreement with the Drucker–Prager criterion was found.

Notes: Crack–opening displacement (COD) measurements were performed on a commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The intrinsic fracture toughness (or crack–tip toughness) of this material was determined using a new evaluation procedure, which takes into account the near–tip CODs and complete crack profile CODs. The crack–tip toughness KI0 was determined from an extrapolation of COD data obtained at various loading stages, thus avoiding the complications caused by subcritical crack growth in PZT. Results for plane strain and plane stress condition are presented.

Notes: The topology of crack tips in soda–lime–silicate glass was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Studies were conducted on cracks that were first propagated in water and then subjected to stress intensity factors either at or below the crack growth threshold. Exposure to loads at the crack growth threshold resulted in long delays to restart crack growth after increasing the stress intensity factor to higher values. After breaking the fracture specimen in two, the “upper” and “lower” fracture surfaces were mapped and compared using AFM. Fracture surfaces matched to an accuracy of better than 0.5 nm normal to the fracture plane and 5 nm within the fracture plane. Displacements between the upper and lower fracture surfaces that developed after a critical holding time were independent of distance from the crack tip, and increased with holding time. Despite the surface displacement, crack tips appeared to be sharp. Results are discussed in terms of a hydronium ion–alkali ion exchange along the crack surfaces and corrosion of the glass surface near the crack tip by hydroxyl ions.

Notes: An evaluation of measurements of crack opening displacements (CODs) on a commercial sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitride (SRBSN) was performed. To determine the intrinsic fracture toughness of this material, a new evaluation method is presented, which takes into account not only the near tip CODs, but the CODs of the complete crack profile. The method is applied on through-thickness cracks in bend bars and contrasted to CODs of Vickers radial cracks. A crack-tip toughness of ∼1.7 MPa·m1/2 is obtained.

Notes: The strength of piezoelectric ceramics differs greatly in tension and bending tests. This effect, which is known to occur for specimens with a natural flaw population, also occurs in tests that involve Knoop-cracked specimens. In such samples, the linear-elastically computed bending strength is ∼35% higher than the tensile strength. Computation of the actual stress distribution in the bending bars has shown that these differences are predominantly caused by the nonlinearity and nonsymmetry of the deformation behavior.

Notes: Soft lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics exhibit a nonsymmetric deformation behavior, where the tensile strains exceed the compressive strains for a given stress level. This phenomenon affects the strains in bending tests. In addition to the normally determined bending strain that is measured by the curvature of a specimen, an additional length extension occurs that can be used as a high-sensitive indicator for the occurrence of the nonsymmetric behavior. Furthermore, it will be shown that the pure tensile and compression behavior may be derived from bending tests.

Notes: A strain-gauge procedure that enables determination of the crack-tip toughness (KI0) from bending-strength tests is described. The procedure is applied to coarse-grained alumina and yields an average KI0 value of 2.51 MPa·m1/2, with a standard deviation of 0.16 MPa·m1/2.

Notes: A procedure was used that made it possible to determine the R-curve for piezoelectric ceramics from tensile strength tests conducted with Knoop-damaged specimens. The resulting crack-tip toughness KI0 was 0.6 MPa·m1/2, and the R-curve starting from this value increased to 1.4 MPa·m1/2 within a 0.7 mm crack extension.

Notes: Environmental-assisted subcritical crack growth on two different /-sialon ceramics is determined in static fatigue tests. The goal of these investigations was to determine the influence of delivering medium of high pressure pumps on their durability (life cycle). Therefore 4-point-bending bars were statically loaded in distilled water and subcritical crack growth was analyzed. The large number of spontaneous failure and survivals made the development of a modified testing procedure necessary in order to obtain a significant database

Notes: Abstract A procedure is proposed, which enables to determine weight functions and stress intensity factors for internal cracks from the known weight function for an edge crack. The procedure is illustrated for the special case of a subsurface crack in the half space.
