Abstract:
Summary It is often said that statistical test methods might be used for existent and only for this purpose exactly pre-formulated hypotheses but not for the framing of new ones. Just the latter were an essential part of scientific research work. This is in fact not true of all statistical estimation and test methods — especially not the factor-analytic methods. These allow, for example, values which are not directly measurable to be estimated. Here are two examples from a particular test situation. A set of variates were once measured or ranged for each member of a sample, persons or test animals, at a definite age. Correlations were calculated. They lie in the „Covariation Chart” according to cattell in a diagonal band between P and R technique. No factor-analytic model exists so far for this situation. One can, however, make a projection on to the two-dimensional area formed between test animals or persons on one hand and the variates on the other, i.e. correlate over the times. The loss of information hereby incurred can be partly made up for by adding the (eliminated) time as a concomitant variable to the other variates.
Notes:
