Conclusions 1. A study was made of the properties of Si3N4-Cr2O3 materials produced by hot casting. The optimum binder content of equal-viscosity slips of this system proved to be 30–40 vol.% rising with increase in chromic oxide concentration. 2. In oxidation resistance tests, the materials exhibited negligible weight gains (6.1–17.1 mg/cm2). 3. In thermal fatigue resistance determinations, the number of 1300-20°C (water) thermal cycles withstood by the materials was as high as 30, and varied with silicon nitride concentration. 4. The impact strength of Si3N4-Cr2O3 materials falls with increase in porosity, but for some compositions exceeds 6 kg-m/cm2. 5. A comparative study was made of Si3N4-Cr2O3 materials and silicon nitride materials containing other oxides. It is shown that materials based on silicon nitride and chromic oxide successfully combine the best properties of their components. The best properties are exhibited by silicon nitride with 15–25 wt.% chromic oxide additions.
