    Notizen: Abstract In order for immune cells to carry out many of their functions, including clearance of infectious agents from tissue, they must first encounter their targets in the tissue. This encounter process is often the rate-limiting step in the overall function. Most immune cells exhibit chemotactic ability, and previous continuum models for encounter rates and dynamics have shown that chemotaxis can be a great advantage to cells by greatly increasing encounter rates relative to those for randomly moving cells. This paper describes computer simulations of discrete cell-target encounter events in two dimensions, for the two cases considered by the continuum models: where only a single cell and a single target are present, and where many cells and targets are present. The results of these simulations verify our previous model predictions that a small amount of chemotactic bias dramatically decreases the encounter time, while further increases in the amount of bias have a much smaller effect. Chemotactic ability is shown to be an important determinant of the kinetics of target clearance, and its effects depend on the initial cell-target ratio and the initial distributions of cells and targets. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides the first computer simulations of particle-target encounter in which there is biased motion of particles toward their targets, and is therefore of general interest beyond specific application to immune cell function.

    Notizen: Abstract Techniques for propagating Rayleigh waves with frequencies varying from 〈1 to 270 MHz were developed for the purpose of nondestructive evaluation of composition or defect gradients near the surface of nonpiezoelectric solids. The surface waves with frequencies greater than 15 MHz were obtained from a novel technique using single crystal wedges, whereas the low frequency waves were produced by a previously used high voltage impulse. Measurements of Rayleigh wave velocities on single crystals of Ge and Al were performed as a test of accuracy and precision and are compared with calculated values.

    Notizen: Abstract The elastic stiffness moduli of single-crystals CoAl2O4, a normal spinel, and CoFe2O4, an inverse spinel, have been determined by an ultrasonic method. The measured values are: C11=290.5, C12=170.3 and C44=138.6 GPa for CoAl2O4, and C11=257.1, C12=150.0 and C44= 85.3 GPa for CoFe2O4. The elastic constants are compared with previously published data of other spinel single crystals and the results show that the cation valence and cation distribution have little influence on the elastic properties of the spinel materials.

    Notizen: Abstract The superconducting transition temperature of single-crystal and polycrystal uranium has been determined as a function of hydrostatic pressure to 24 kbar. Although the general form of theT c (P) variation is similar for the two types of material, features are present in the detailed behavior for the single-crystal samples which are not found for polycrystal samples. These features are presumed to be associated with the first-order transitions observed at zero pressure. A low-temperature phase diagram has been constructed and the electronic nature of the various phases is discussed.
