    Notes: Consider a lamina of ore of thickness 2t whose electrical resistivity p2 is much smaller than the resistivity p1 of the surrounding host rock. The induced polarization response of such an ore body is investigated under the assumption that it arises from the variation of p2 with the frequency of measurement.Let p2l and p2h be the resistivities of the ore-body for the low and high frequencies of measurement and L a length of the order of the distance between the transmitting electrodes. A theory is developed under the assumptions that each of the quantities t/L, p2l/p1, p2h/p1, Lp2l/2tp1, and Lp2h/tp1 is small. The main conclusion is that the frequency effect parameter P is given approximately by P=cL(p2l − p2h)/2tp1, where the constant c is independent of t, p2l, p2h, and p1. Thus for a family of similar ore bodies having differing values of t, P will be the larger the smaller t.Detailed results are given for a semi-infinite submerged dipping dyke and the two dimensional Wenner array.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, methods for estimating the effect of continual (but bounded) disturbances on ecosystems modelled by difference equations are discussed. The approach adopted is to estimate the region of state space (called a reachable set) which can be reached by the disturbed system from an initial healthy state in a given time period. Liapunov stability methods for estimating these reachable sets are presented and applied to two specific population models.

    Notes: Abstract This paper relates the stability properties of a class of delay-difference equations to those of an associated scalar difference equation. Simple but powerful conditions for testing global stability are presented which are independent of the length of the time delay involved. For models which do not have globally stable equilibria, estimates of stability regions are obtained. Some well known baleen whale models are used to illustrate the results.

    Notes: Summary Effective Lyapunov and Lyapunov-like functions for a class of discrete time models of interacting populations are presented. These functions are constructed on the biologically meaningful principle that a viable population must absorb energy from external sources when its density is low and it must dissipate energy to the environment when its density is high. These functions can be used to establish that a discrete time model is globally stable or that its solutions are ultimately confined to an acceptable region of the state space. The latter is especially interesting when the model has chaotic solutions. These methods are applied to a single species model and a model of competition between two species.

    Notes: Summary A definition for an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) is given which is applicable to a general differential equation population model and two difference equation ‘analogs’. With the introduction of a fitnessgenerating function, it is possible to develop necessary conditions for the determination of an ESS for each of these systems. In most situations, an ESS for one system will also be an ESS for the other. Necessary conditions for an ESS are obtained. Under certain restrictions, they are shown to be valid, even under an unstable equilibrium in population density. the results are illustrated with an example which has the same ESS solution whether a continuous or discrete model is used. The behavior of the ESS for the discrete model is then examined under unstable equilibrium conditions in population density.

    Notes: Abstract We are concerned with the problem of estimating the reachable set ℛ for a two-dimensional linear discrete-time system with bounded controls. Different approaches are adopted depending on whether the system matrix has real or complex eigenvalues. For the complex eigenvalue case, the quasiperiodic nature of minimum time trajectories is exploited in developing a simple, but often accurate, procedure. For the real eigenvalue case, over estimates of reachable sets can be trivially obtained using a decomposition method.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear optimal control problems subject to control constraints. We assume that an initial condition for the dynamical system is specified. Then, we can easily compute an openloop optimal control using any convenient optimal control software package. Now, suppose the optimal trajectory is perturbed due to a change in initial conditions or uncertainty in the model equations. If the perturbations are not too large, it is known that the neighbouring extremal approach can be used to obtain a feedback law which adjusts the open-loop optimal control accordingly provided there are no bounds on the control variables. In this paper, our aim is to develop a computational method for the more general case of fixed-time problems with control constraints.
