Notes: Abstract  Both surface rendering and volume rendering have been extensively applied to CT data for 3-D visualization of skeletal pathology. This review illustrates potential limitations of each technique by directly comparing 3-D images of bone pathology created using volume rendering and surface rendering. Surface renderings show gross 3-D relationships most effectively, but suffer from more stairstep artifacts and fail to effectively display lesions hidden behind overlying bone or located beneath the bone cortex. Volume-rendering algorithms effectively show subcortical lesions, minimally displaced fractures, and hidden areas of interest with few artifacts. Volume algorithms show 3-D relationships with varying degrees of success depending on the degree of surface shading and opacity. While surface rendering creates more three-dimensionally realistic images of the bone surface, it may be of limited clinical utility due to numerous artifacts and the inability to show subcortical pathology. Volume rendering is a flexible 3-D technique that effectively displays a variety of skeletal pathology with few artifacts.

Notes: Abstract  Tropical pyomyositis is a rare cause of multiple abscesses of skeletal muscle. The entity is rare in temperate climates and, as its name suggests, is more common in areas such as the tropics and South Pacific. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of infection. Therapy is aggressive, with surgical debridement and drainage followed by antibiotics. We report an unusual case of tropical myositis which simulated tumor recurrence in a patient without the typical risk factors associated with tropical pyomyositis.

Notes: Abstract Spiral or helical computed tomography (CT) allows the rapid acquisition of volumes of CT data in a 24- to 32-s time frame. Rapid data acquisition is accompanied by the ability to reconstruct the images at any pre-determined interval (1–10 mm). This technique is optimal for studies requiring iodinated vascular contrast because it allows data acquisition during the peak contrast levels, optimizing lesion detection. The technique is also excellent for studies that need two and /or three-dimensional reconstruction as it decreases the chance of interscan motion. Spiral CT has significant potential for a wide range of musculoskeletal imaging applications including in musculoskeletal infection, soft tissue tumors, trauma, and in the oncologic patient.

Notes: Abstract  We present an unusual case of a granulocytic sarcoma (chloroma) of the sacrum which predated the initial clinical manifestation of acute myelogenous leukemia. Although granulocytic sarcomas occur in up to 9.1% of cases of acute myelogenous leukemia they usually present concurrently with the leukemic presentation. Although granulocytic sarcomas can involve several different organ systems, bone is the most common site.

Notes: Conclusions Spiral scanning using inferior to superior data acquisition is our preferred scanning protocol in patients with suspected pelvic pathology. Pelvic imaging with spiral CT, through peak vascular enhancement and data continuity, can help define normal anatomic structures and improve detection and characterization of disease.

Notes: Abstract Two cases of rapture of the urinary bladder following cystoscopic clot evacuation are presented. Both patients had hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) secondary to cyclophosphamide therapy. The bladder injuries were not immediately recognized. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated the bladder rupture in both patients.

Notes: Abstract We describe the findings of an isolated common iliac artery aneurysm that formed a fistulous tract with the terminal ileum diagnosed with dynamic computed tomography (CT). The role of CT in the diagnosis of arterioenteric fistula is addressed.

Notes: Abstract. Purpose: To report our experience with fluid–fluid levels within focal hepatic lesions and determine if this finding indicates a specific diagnosis. Materials and methods: We reviewed our experience with eight patients with focal hepatic lesions that showed fluid–fluid level on cross-sectional imaging. Seven CT scans, four MR examinations, and four sonograms were reviewed. The hepatic lesions included metastases (four patients), biliary cystadenoma (two patients), cavernous hemangioma (one patient), and hematoma (one patient). A histologic diagnosis was made in all cases. Results: Fluid–fluid levels were found in both malignant and benign focal hepatic lesions. Fluid–fluid levels were seen on six CT scans, four MR examinations and on none of the four sonograms. Radiologic–pathologic correlation showed that fluid–fluid levels corresponded to internal hemorrhage in all but one case. In the case of cavernous hemangioma, a fluid–fluid level was found to correspond to a sedimentation effect within a large vascular space. Conclusion: Fluid–fluid levels in focal hepatic lesions do not indicate a specific diagnosis but can be seen in both malignant and benign conditions affecting the liver.

Notes: Abstract Serous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas is typically considered to represent a benign pancreatic neoplasm. We present a case where the tumor displayed unusually aggressive behavior with metastatic disease to the liver and pancreatic bed. Although serous cystic neoplasms should be considered a benign lesion and will be cured in most cases by surgical excision, the radiologist should be aware that on occasion they can exhibit aggressive behavior.
