Notes: The method of analysis for a polycondensation polymer containing the carboxylate and sulfonate functional groups has been devised. A combination of infrared spectroscopy and combustion analysis provides a simple and accurate determination of the monomeric units and their molar distribution in the polymer.

Notes: Analysis for composition of the styrene-isobutylene copolymer has been accomplished by independent techniques which include carbon-hydrogen analysis and infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The use of blends of homopolymers presents difficulties in establishing true absorptivities for the solution of two-component systems, and appropriate corrections were applied to enable use of IR as an analytical technique. Carbonhydrogen elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy were used to verify the IR results.

Notes: A rapid, quantitative, direct procedure for the determination of monomeric styrene in a styrene-based polymer emulsion has been developed. The method includes the extraction of styrene in cyclohexane and a subsequent measurement of the ultraviolet absorbance of the solution. Determination of, and compensation for interference from, acetophenone is also described. The range of 0-5% monomeric styrene was studied by statistical methods.

Notes: Infrared and near-infrared spectra of 3-methylbutene-1 were observed for the vapor phase at room temperature. Also, Raman displacements and depolarization factors of 3-methylbutene-1 in methanol and carbon tetrachloride were obtained at the same temperature. Tentative assignments of the observed Raman and infrared bands were made, and a classification of bands on the basis of group frequencies is given.
