Notizen: Abstract A simple procedure is suggested for calculating the concentration dependence of the viscosity of a suspension of two types of hard spheres, which have considerably different diameters. It is shown that for the calculations it is sufficient to know the concentration dependence of the suspension viscosity of monodisperse hard spheres.

Notizen: The effect of the rate and time of mixing in a batch mixer on the phase structure of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blends with various rheological properties of the components was studied. Regions with substantially different average sizes of the dispersed particles were found in the studied blends. Differences between the average size of the particles in individual regions of the samples persist in all blends and mixing conditions under study. No dependence of the average particle size on the rate of mixing has been obtained for the PP/PS (75/25) blends. On the other hand, decrease of the average particle size with increasing rate of mixing has been found for the PP/PS (95/5) blend. These results are discussed as a consequence of the competition between the breakup and coalescence of the dispersed particles. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The dependence of phase structure on the intensity of mixing was studied for two modified polyamide/[poly(phenylene oxide) + polystyrene] (50/50) blends with different viscosity ratios of components. In these blends, polyamide forms the matrix and the mixture of miscible polymers [poly(phenylene oxide) and polystyrene] forms the disperse phase at all rates of mixing. The average size of the droplets of the disperse phase grows with increasing rate of mixing. This (rather surprising) result is explained as a consequence of the dynamic equilibrium between breakup and coalescence of droplets in a highly concentrated system at the condition of steady mixing. Generally, the dependence of droplet size on rate of mixing is not necessarily a monotonic function for blends with a high content of the disperse phase. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: A new model in which solvent molecules are regarded as discrete particles is used for investigating the influence of solvent orientation near a polymer chain and of the anisotropy of the internal electric field on the Kerr effect in a polymer solution. The relation derived for the Kerr constant consists of two parts containing nine terms each in the general case (the physical meaning of the terms is briefly discussed). Relations for the above effect in a nonpolar isotropic solvent, and explicit calculations of the Kerr constant for a simple model of a rigid polymer molecule are given.

Notizen: A new, more realistic optical model of a dilute polymer solution is used to calculate the intrinsic birefringence. A general formula is derived valid for an arbitrary equilibrium distribution function of particles in the system. Besides the contributions due to the polymer and solvent, the resulting relation for intrinsic birefringence also contains terms reflecting the effect of orientation of solvent surrounding the polymer chain and the contribution of optical interactions between polymer segments and molecules of solvent. A detailed discussion of the optical interactions in an isotropic solvent reveals that the problem may be transformed in the first approximation into that of interactions between excess dipoles; however, any separation of the macroform and microform effects has no theoretical justification. It is shown that the microform effect depends on a detailed optical model of the statistical segment, and this effect is calculated for two simple models. The expression suggested by Tsvetkov cannot be applied to a segment consisting of anisotropic monomers.

Notizen: An optical model of a system in which both polymer segments and solvent molecules are described as point dipoles has been used to calculate the intensity of light depolarized in scattering. The final expression consists of six terms, the physical meaning of which is briefly discussed. An approximation procedure has been worked out for the calculation of two interaction terms due to deviations of the local field in solution from the Lorentz-Lorenz field; the terms have been calculated for simple models of flexible and rigid molecules. Their dependence on molecular weight appears to be approximately the same as the intrinsic anisotropy of the polymer molecule; their contribution is nonzero even for a solvent isorefractive with the polymer.

Notizen: The theory of coalescence in melts of polymer blends was derived on the basis of the Smoluchowski theory for colloid systems. An approximation for a flux of particles used for solutions of colloids in water was analyzed. It is shown that this approximation cannot be used for polymer blends, and an approximation is suggested that could be justifiably used for them. A system of equations was derived for the time dependence of the number of individual i-mers, using the relation suggested for the diffusion flux of particles. In an approximation of the uniform increase in particle size, equations were found for the time dependence of the number of particles, the average radius of the particle, and the interface area in the volume unit of the blend. The suggested theory predicts measurable coalescence in considerably more viscous systems than mechanically applied relations of the Smoluchowski theory for aqueous colloid solutions.

Notizen: The effect of the content and type of linear polyethylene, of the type of EPDM rubber and of the preparation procedure on the mechanical properties of ternary blends polypropylene/EPDM rubber/polyethylene was investigated. Mixtures of EPDM rubber with polyethylene raise the impact strength of polypropylene more than pure EPDM rubber. The impact strength of the blends is affected by the procedure employed in the preparation, but not by the type of polyethylene used.
