Notes: [Auszug] Brome Mountain, the largest of the Cretaceous Mon-teregian intrusives, is located approximately 70 km east of Montreal. It consists of an alkaline gabbro which forms the southern part of the body and a variety of alkaline syenites in the northern part of the complex. The gabbro exhibits excellent ...

Notes: Abstract Lead isotopic ratios of bulk sulphides from eleven stratigraphically equivalent deposits from the Köli Nappe sequence in the Trondheim district, and eleven from the Köli sequence at Sulitjelma Norway, have been determined. When plotted on 207Pb/204Pb-206Pb/204Pb diagrams, the data define a linear trend extending from the mantle to the upper crustal model growth curves of Doe and Zartman (1979). Moreover, the data from both districts lie on the same trend. This isotopic trend is interpreted as resulting from the mixing of lead from a mantle source (probably the host basalts) with that of an upper-crustal end member (either sialic basement or the terrigenous sediments surrounding the host basalts). It is also concluded that the deposits in both camps formed more or less contemporaneously. The isotopic mixing line is comparable with that obtained from Besshi ore pyrites in Japan, for which an aulacogenic depositional environment, similar to that found today in the Gulf of California, has been proposed (Fox 1984). It is concluded that a similar depositional environment was responsible for the Trondheim and Sulitjelma ores, although an ensialic back-arc basin, or other possible environments, cannot be entirely ruled out.

Notes: Abstract Propionyl CoA carboxylase activity is inhibited in normal but increased in NKH cells by valine. The effects are probably not large enough for diagnostic use.

Notes: Summary A study of variation in three peptidases (PEP−3 to −5) in a parthenogenetic S. avenae field population at Rothamsted using serial one-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (involving changes of gel concentration and electrophoretic run-time) increased the overall number of “allozymes” (mobility variants) detected from 10 under standard conditions (6% gels, 2 h run-time) to 22, as well as revealing putative heterozygous banding patterns under some test conditions. However, an examination of another enzyme, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) in a sample collected at Rothamsted the following year failed, using a combination of serial methods (changes of gel concentration) and isoelectric focusing, to increase the total number of 6-PGD bands separated (seven, none of which appeared to be allelic in origin). Nevertheless, some major bands were split into several bands, whilst other infrequent bands were either gained or lost. The findings are briefly discussed.

Notes: An examination of the theory of thermal conductivity of amorphous dielectrics as applied to polymeric materials indicates that it is reasonable to expect that the conductivity is stress dependent. An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the validity of this hypothesis for a number of plastics at temperatures below their respective glass transition points. Poly(methyl methacrylate), nylon, and Delrin were chosen as representative of a wide range of percentage crystallinity and were tested at compressive stresses up to 140 kg./cm.2 and temperatures between 4 and 38°C. The results indicate that the conductivity may increase as much as 20% and that the dependence on stress is a function of temperature and the type of polymer examined.
